Random Song Generator is the debut CD from multi-instrumentalist and all around good guy Neil Santos. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2001 with a degree in Film Scoring, Neil has been teaching guitar and playing professionally in the Nashua, NH area. “Teaching and playing in cover bands has really allowed me to dig deeply into the techniques and ideas that go into creating a great tune,” Says Neil, “When you’ve learned thousands of songs some of that info rubs of on you. Pair that knowledge with some pirated software and all my free time for the past year and this CD is what you get.”
And the CD is good. The songs flow nicely from one to another sounding much like a musical suite of one hit wonders. Each cut has it’s own character and atmosphere which tend to get more exotic and darker as the CD progresses. Neil flexes his musical muscles by playing all the instruments on the album himself with only two special guest appearances, one on a lead vocal spot and the other on a ripping bong solo. “I enjoy the give and take that comes when you write in a traditional band setting, but to be able to achieve the full scope of my vision I needed to write and perform all the parts myself. I’m not the best keyboard player and all the drums are programmed (though you’d never know it) but I’m pretty nasty on guitar and bass.” Neil also takes on the role of lead vocalist, which is new for him. “For all the vocals I just went for it you know. I seem to have a pretty adaptable voice, which is good for the wide mix of styles on this CD. I could hear in my head what I thought that it could sound like if someone else sang it and just kept making noises till I got close to that.” he says laughing.
There is an eclectic mix of styles present on the CD ranging from pop to funk, and from techno to metal. Neil attributes this hodgepodge of music to his wide tastes. “A lot of people draw lines for themselves when it comes to music. They will just disregard this style or that style in general on principle. I simply like good songs no matter what category they fit into, and only I can decide what is a good song for myself but first I have to hear it. If I never give it a chance how will I know? Put it this way. As a musician my job is to listen to all the music I can and put the best parts I find into a song for you to listen to. That way you can skip all the crap. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.” he grins. “So then I become the random song generator.”
