Some say Niya is a living doll. Some say she has the voice of an angel. Some say her songwriting is a love note to God. As you experience “Someday” her debut CD, you will get to have your say. Five years in the making and now like a well-seasoned stew, Niya serves up an eclectic mix of musical styles and genres ranging from the bold, out-of-the box “None Like You,” to the rhythmic majestic hymn “When I Survey.” Niya has come a long way from singing in the church choir at age 2 to her first CD release. She is a graduate of Hampton University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and a concentration in Vocal Performance.
This singer-songwriter, dancer, choreographer, actress, is no stranger to the industry. She made her stage debut at nine-years-old, as “Little Ti Moune” in Once on This Island.” Other stage credits include: “The Wiz,” “The Piano Lesson,” and Debbie Allen’s “Soul Possessed.” At fifteen, Niya became a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers and Publishers) after writing and publishing her first song, “In Memory of 4 Little Girls.” It was showcased on MTV, CNN and on radio throughout the country. Niya has performed with a Who’s Who list of recording artists. She and her choir (Union Temple Baptist Church Youth Choir) were featured as background vocalists for Michael Jackson, Barry Manilow, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Reba McEntire, Patti LaBelle and Boyz II Men.
She also opened for esteemed gospel artist, Shirley Caesar, at Orchestra Hall in Detroit, MI. Niya has had the privilege of working with noted television composer Kurt Farquar, and her songs featured on “King of Queens” “Just Jordan” and “Love Inc.” She has taught gospel music in Japan (Osaka, Fukuoka, and Tokyo) and is excited about the world-wide release of her debut album, “Someday.”
