Blondesong is excited to announce the release of her third album of all new original songs for 2008 titled “In My Dreams.” She is very excited about many of these works, and feels they show a good progression in her abilities, since her debut CD in 2006 titled “Cloudy Day.” Several new songs are truly unique and different than anything she’s done before, especially, "Time Will Tell" which is a fun and lively tune, or one of her favorites: "Rain Comes Down" because she loves thunder storms, which features a "jazzy" piano that sounds like the rain to her- complete with thunder and rain sound effects! She also enjoys the mellow songs like "I Get So High" and "I''m Alone " that stick in your head, as well as the title track, "In My Dreams" which is a more complex up-tempo but melancholy song about lost love - It portrays a woman who, while sleeping, is pleasantly dreaming that her lost love still loves her...until she wakes up to realize it''s not true and they will never be together.
The songs still have a familiar style -with various new subjects- and portray a wide array of emotions from blissful to melancholy moods, so the music and lyrics invoke feelings both of happiness and sometimes sorrow within each song. Subjects of most songs are based on love and some tell a story or describe an emotion often shared by others, as well. The music could generally be described as a mix of styles - with each particular song changing and/or ranging from pop or light rock, to slightly heavier rock or alternative music, although, the track
“Time Will Tell” has a sexy, bluesy, country beat in the rhythm. Variety in all the musical composition ranges from soft acoustic guitars, piano and strings sounds to upbeat, fun and lively, slightly heavier guitars and drums…and are great to sing along to. The artist has a very rich and clear, unique voice and uses multiple part harmony for a deeper effect. Her use of overlapping or complex harmonies in most songs is amazing and sometimes people don’t realize it comes from one person. In other words, the very low to high ranges in some of the songs sound like several different singers, but it’s all Natalie Mims Friese a.k.a. Blondesong! When she was asked in a recent interview what major influences could be heard within her music, she responded, “I just adore David Archuleta right now, he is fabulous- especially his version of "Think Of Me," but other inspiring voices that have influenced me include a very wide range of genres such as Patsy Cline, Michael Buble, Sinead O''Connor, The B-52s, The Smiths, Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Puddle Of Mudd, Linkin Park, Creed, and CCR...just to name a few! However, My sound or style is actually more comparable to artists such as Sixpence None The Richer, The Cranberries, Eva Cassidy, Ingrid Michaelson, Jewel, Karen Carpenter, The Dixie Chicks, The Go-Go‘s or Cass Elliot...and I get a LOT of requests from family and friends to sing my version of Janis Joplin''s "Me and Bobby McGee" while my husband plays guitar -which is one of my favorite cover songs to perform."
Natalie was born and currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas, and has loved singing since she was a child with her family, who are also musically inclined. She says that since she was a baby, her grandparents and mother always helped fill her heart with music. For as long as she can remember, most of the time they were together, for every holiday or party, or any time friends would visit, and even on ordinary days after he came home from work, her grandfather would play his prized piano and everyone would sing song after song leading into each other like one big medley. They still do to this day, only sadly, not as often because it''s harder to get everyone together. Her grandfather grew up with 9 brothers and sisters, and for fun, they either played baseball or the piano! So, Natalie explains that he learned to play literally hundreds of songs from his era and beyond- by using chords, all by ear and from memory! He passed some of that knowledge of chords on to her as well, teaching her since the age of 5, but also in the recent interview, Natalie modestly said, “My limited abilities on the piano cannot hold a candle to his... But I''ll never forget how to sing those great old songs! We are very close and even at age 90, my grandfather is very active in the community, and he plays his piano whenever we get together. His style is oldies, and we still sing songs like “Crazy” by Patsy Cline, “Who''s Sorry Now?” "Up A Lazy River," and "That''s Life," and many patriotic ones: "Dixieland" and "When the Saints go Marching In," and plenty of gospel : "One Day at a Time" and "Love Lifted Me." and lots of holiday songs ranging from “White Christmas” to “Frosty the Snowman” and way too many more to name! It is so much fun!“
Also when she was very young, from the ages of 4 to 11, she, her mother and sister were involved with their local playhouse "Casa Manana" studying dance and acting and auditioning for musical plays like The Wizard of Oz, and the Sound of Music and Cinderella. On that subject Natalie says, “My Mom got several parts, and although I missed out on the big ones, I did do some lesser known plays, and was with her constantly for her own rehearsals.... I was so young, but I remember memorizing practically every line and direction in each play just from watching them practice, and I learned a whole lot from that. My favorite of my Mom''s performances were from Cabaret, Wizard of Oz, Tom Sawyer, and Rip Van Winkle and I definitely knew all the songs and caught the desire to be an entertainer then!”
Since that time, Natalie has also lived in Tennessee and Alabama while attending college. First, she went to MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) in Murfreesboro, TN to study music right after graduating high school in Texas in 1985. Unfortunately, she became discouraged because although she felt she was a good singer, all of the classes she took in music including Beginning Piano and sight reading felt overwhelming... She explains, “It seemed hopeless at the time because I couldn''t read music at all and had always just played the chords on the piano by ear and sung...like my grandfather. I remember in the piano class, we were trying to learn to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and at that moment I was thinking "This is hopeless, I should have learned to read music a long time ago…If I can''t even play this simple song, it''s useless! It''s gonna take forever to get anywhere with music!" It was the same feeling in my sight reading class...and it was very depressing, so I kind of became frustrated with music at that point.” Instead, she found solace in an elective art class she was also taking there, and after completing a year at MTSU, she decided to switch her major and school. She adds, “ I had such a negative experience, that I hated Tennessee! “
So, in 1986, Natalie transferred to The University of South Alabama in Mobile and loved it there. She did very well in all her classes- especially in art and photography- and became the Vice President of the Student Art Association. Her positive experience there boosted her spirits again, and her love of music returned to the forefront. She recollects, “I met my great friend, Jenny that first year who plays guitar, and we would sing in harmony together for hours ‘til her fingers hurt! So, opportunities arose, and I began singing publicly in college after entering a singing contest on campus with Jenny. She played guitar perfectly while I belted out a Sinead O''Connor song called "Just Like You Said It Would Be" and we got a standing O and won $100! I also remember the first time I ever sang with a band was in Dauphin Island, AL- my favorite beach in the US. Some friends and I were in an ocean-side bar and we asked if the band there could play "Crazy" by Patsy Cline and they wanted me to sing it! And after that one, I sang "I Fall To Pieces." What a thrill ! That led to a few more occasional performances at local clubs in the area. It was so exciting and the experience was a good foundation to pursue further success in music in a new way.” Eventually, the inspiration to become a songwriter came from an idea to set her many works of poetry she has written throughout the years to music and thereby create a medium for which people of every generation can enjoy. She moved back to Texas shortly after graduating from USA in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and became (and is currently) a working artist who creates artwork using mediums including photography, drawing and painting....and of course, has continued to sing.
Over the years, she has given live performances many times for cultural and community functions in Fort Worth, Texas including the Fort Worth Ladies Club and Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation Gala scholarship events, and has continued to sing for numerous venues in her local area. She has performed multiple times for “Johnnie High’s Country Music Revue” and plans to again soon - usually during the summer months. In addition, Natalie appeared on the “Joyful Praise” television show for 5 episodes which still air at present. Some of her favorite activities have been for the Fort Worth Cats Minor League baseball team in their variety show called the “Feline Follies,” in which she was responsible for two solo acts including song and dance. They have decided to make it an annual event for which she has been invited to return. And two of her most exciting performances to date, were singing "SNOW" for the November 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award Gala in Fort Worth, held at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel, and on December 1, 2007, for Blondesong’s Christmas album debut, she sang "CHRISTMASTIME IS HERE!" and "SNOW" in a live, outdoor event at the Fort Worth Cats LaGrave Feild Christmas celebration. On that occasion, she was the opening act for the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra Christmas performance titled the "Teddy Bear Concert," whose goal was to collect and distribute plush toys for children in need during the holiday season. She is currently planning a private CD Release party for "In My Dreams" by Fall of 2008, to be combined with an Art Exhibition and Sale of original paintings created by Blondesong and three other Fine Artists.
In conclusion, Blondesong is most happy and proud to submit her third CD of original musical composition, lyrics and singing voice, but admits, “ I’m usually a very humble person and I laugh at myself a lot and get self-critical at times - especially about performing, and of course, of my work, but my Dream is to make some kind of lasting contribution in the music field as a songwriter, whether it includes me singing or someone else. I would love it if any of my songs – especially the Christmas ones- became classics to be enjoyed year after year and beyond my own lifetime!” She hopes others will find beauty, humor and empathy within each song she writes.
Above all, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and her two dogs. She loves creative writing, nature and traveling and whole-heartedly believes in the importance of a sense of humor. She plans to continue to pursue a career path in art and music for years to come.
