John Dowland (1563-1626) was one of the most known as a composer, a lutenist and a singer in europe at his time. His composed many songs, and also about hundred pieces for lute. The Most of them are dance music like Pavans, Galliards or Almains, but he wrote also as name of "Fantasie" (Fantasia, Fancy, Farewell) piece without forms of dance.
Many Fantasies of him are exact polyphony, and they ware probably the origin of "fugue" (https://www.tradebit.comh was born about 60 years later from death of Dowland). I think these are most comlicate polyphony music for lute (guitar). Clearly, they are made by the master of lute. It is amazingly that these wonderful music ware wrote over 440 years ago.
