"...Jaime Valle is almost as revered for his individual contributions to Latin Jazz as he is for Equinox, the stellar collection of simpatico jazz auteurs-like percussionist Gene Perry from Puerto Rico and San Diego''s premiere trumpeter, Gilbert Castellanos-who collaborate so enthusiastically with him. Known for his generous musicianship, gifted lyrics and formidable chops,"
.-Will K. Shilling

"...Jazz guitarist Jaime Valle’s latest nine-cut CD, “Vital Signs,” shows much of the same wonderfully Latino flair as his other 3 albums. It has a heady cast of musicians who make it click, including bass icon Bob Magnusson, saxophonist Tony Orterga, percussion and keyboard marvel Allan Phillips (with whom Valle collaborated to produce this album) as well as drummer Cliff Almond and trumpet Gilbert Castellanos.
The album opens with Djalma Ferreira’s “Recado Bossa Nova,” a pleasant Brazilian romp that features Magnusson’s indisputable prowess. The following two instrumentals offer a contrast in tone and mood. “Mambo Inn” is a deliciously happy tune, while “Favela” is a melody full of longing and melancholy inspired by the Brazilian ghettoes .
Arguably the best cut of the album has to be the great bolero written by Osvaldo Farres, “Tres Palabras” (“Three Words”). While Valle delivers a heart-felt rendition, it is the moving bass bowing of Magnusson that dramatically turns the song from a romantic offering into an aching, almost unbearably sad plea from the soul.
The rest of the album has the same combination of thrusting salsa -- with Valle at the top of his guitar-playing – and dark, moody themes. The last song of the album,
“Mi Descarga” (which in the Caribbean region means a musical jam, thus “My Jam”), written by Valle and Phillips, offers a taste of what you get when you see Valle live with his group “Equinox” -- full-speed ahead salsa with an exploding percussion section featuring Phillips, conguero Gene Perry and drummer César Lozano, Santana-like riffs from Valle and a devilish solo from Ortega, with Castellano’s trumpet lending the song a calming influence. Valle once more comes up with a winner."

JAIME VALLE: VITAL SIGNS
{BluePort Jazz BP-J012}

The first album publication of legendary jazz guitarist JAIME VALLE
on BluePort Records is notable for its continuation of the guitar maestro''s
longstanding commitment to the combination of great sound and impeccable musical taste.

The signal achievement of VITAL SIGNS resides in the album''s celebration of life -- a cheerful, uproarious affirmation of life''s generosity. Jaime Valle underwent heart surgery under the skillful hands and caring expertise of a team of surgeons who, as they operated, played his music as they did their work. VITAL SIGNS not only celebrates their success. It is a heartfelt appreciation to that team of surgeons for keeping the maestro''s music going strong.

VITAL SIGNS demonstrates that rare fact: a tribute to others that celebrates life''s buoyant comic cheer need not be ponderous. The music in this album surges, sprints, gallops, and lifts one''s spirit from start to finish.
