Details:
Who is Jeffrey Morgan? Jeffrey is a singer/songwriter long recognized as an important part of the Iowa City folk rock scene. In his time, Jeffrey has played in folky duos, rock roll oldies bands, and hopping and bopping honky tonk outfits with such notables as Cam Waters, Joe Peterson and Will Jennings of Big Wooden Radio, and John Lake. Jeffrey is a natural master story teller not only through his songs but in his stage patter. He connects with his audience with his energetic humor and shares whimsical stories about how a particular song was written or what''s on his mind at the time. Realizing that folk music goes hand in hand with activism, he is a member of Musicians United for Peace and was one of the Palo 13, a group who, in an act of civil disobedience, trespassed on an unsafe nuclear facility in Iowa and was acquitted. (Thank you very much) His music has also been featured in soundtracks for several Iowa City films.
How''d he get this way? His grandfather was a bluegrass wonder who could play any instrument handed to him and Jeffrey''s father introduced him to the world of C and W, where he listened to Hank Snow, Burl Ives, and Johnny Cash. As he grew older, he fell under the spell of the "Other Three B''s"; Buffalo Springfield, the Beatles, and the Byrds. Jeffrey''s music reflects all his past influences and experiences but also blends bits of blues, jazz and rock into "Americana folk rock". When you listen to Jeffrey''s songs, you realize it''s not typical folk. Neither is Jeffrey.
What others say about Jeffrey Jim Musser of the Iowa City Press Citizen wrote "Of all of the musicians who have worked the Iowa City area over the years, you''d be hard-pressed to come up with one with a more positive attitude, a sunnier disposition or a readier smile than Jeffrey Morgan...A fine guitarist with a cozy, favorite-shirt tenor voice and truly wacky sense of humor". Steve Horowitz of Little Village writes (Jeffrey).. "puts out a pleasant vibe singing and playing. He''s having a good time and the fun rubs off on the listener."
What is Wild Ride? Jeffrey''s CD, "Wild Ride", has been called "a charming showcase of Morgan''s easy tunefulness and upbeat world view." Jeffrey sings, plays all manner of acoustic and electric guitars, piano, and even bass on the CD but he also features a generous helping of Iowa City and Washington talent. Eleven of the twelve songs are original Jeffrey tunes, two of which he co-penned with Iowa City guitar slinger John Lake. The CD also features a gorgeous rendition of John Hartford''s instrumental, "Presbyterian Guitar", which showcases the ethereal interplay between Jeffrey''s guitar and the always amazing fiddle of Al Murphy. Just when you think the song is ending, the sweet sounds of the "Jeffrey Choir" begin singing lyrics that Jeffrey wrote for the song. The song "Wild Ride" was written on the day Dale Earnhardt died but also has a deeper connection to Jeffrey''s two sons and the death of Jeffrey''s father. The song is a out and out take no prisoners rocker and features lead work by co-producer Mark Chorpening on slide guitar and "Jerry Lee" piano. Jeffrey''s song "Pull the Sails In" was recorded by the national group "Collective Vision" and, on the CD, Barbara Boyle''s lead vocal is tenderly magical. Jeffrey and Barbara''s harmonies throughout the CD are heartfelt and passionate, as is the three part vocalizing of Jeffrey, Kathleen Schoon, and co-producer Mark Chorpening. Throughout the CD, wry and insightful lyrics for the head and heart, strong harmonies and catchy melodies abound.
What others say about "Wild Ride" Mr. Musser again: The recording is clean and uncluttered, fairly oozing the immediate feel of an autumnal guitar pull in the front parlor." From Steve Horowitz: "Morgan takes risks by releasing such a personal disc in this age of professionalism. He doesn''t dress up the material with slick production but keeps the arrangements and vocals clean and honest. ...Singing and playing music is one of life''s pleasures as is listening to the results here."
Why you should buy "Wild Ride" Jeffrey''s CD was named one of the "Best of The Rest" in Jim Musser''s Top 20 albums of 2004 for the Iowa City Press Citizen. "Wild Ride" is a rollicking outing for the musical senses and you are guaranteed a good journey. Pick one up, take it for a spin, and enjoy the ride. Jeffrey''s more than just a nice guy, he''s a talented singer/songwriter with songs that will stay with you. (And, if you buy a copy of his CD, he''ll write you a very nice thank you)
