Signed, Infinity CD
“Signed, Infinity” was officially completed in August of 2008. This is my first CD that includes a cover song (“The Lord’s Prayer”). Most of the others are songs I’ve written over the course of many years and there are two new songs on the CD (“Signed, Infinity” and “One Chapter More”).
Although the songs are old, the recordings are all new. I recorded all of these songs at my home in Ocala, Florida during the spring and summer of 2008. I used a software program called Acid Pro and, of course, my trusty 12 string acoustic guitar.
The first song on “Signed, Infinity,” "Such Imaginings Go On", is the oldest song of the collection. I wrote this song when I was eighteen or nineteen years old in 1974. After all these years, the song still reflects a basic belief I have that we are living this lifetime to learn. How those lessons unfold is truly a mystery and often a frustration but through it all, I believe, we become better people.
The second song, "1970 Nova," is a song I wrote about being young and fearless. On the surface, it is a song about my old car but, in truth, it is about the spirit we possess when we are young that enables us to pursue our goals with absolute faith. As for the car itself, yes I had a 1970 Nova. I didn’t own it in 1970, though! I owned it toward the end of the 1970s and never doubted its ability to “take me everywhere.” I’d “crank her up and she’d get me there.”
“From Zero To Nine” is the third song on the collection and feels like an old friend whenever I “revisit” it. The song is self-explanatory in its reflection of my optimistic nature to believe that “happiness must be from zero to nine.”
The fourth song on “Signed, Infinity” is the cover song. It is one of two new songs on the collection. I actually woke up with this song playing in my head in the key of F. I often have a hard time with the F key (on guitar) and so I am actually playing this in E with a capo on the first fret. I love the country flavor of this song.
“It’s A Maybe I’ll Find Something To Do Kind Of Day” is a song I wrote as a joke in the 1990s when I worked at a radio station (WTMC). There was a reggae program hosted by a great guy who went on-air by the name Jamaica Joe. I originally recorded this song to sound more reggae than it does on this CD. I recorded it on a radio cartridge (to be used on the air) and labeled it with the artist identified as The Dreadlock Bohemians and slipped it into Joe’s collection. Every now and then I would be driving down the road, listening to Joe, and I would hear him play it. He never knew it was actually me.
The fifth song is “Is There A Love Somewhere.” I have always been a sucker for a yearning love song and so I end up writing a lot of them. I’ve always been especially fond of this one. I hadn’t considered this song for this collection because, quite frankly, at this point in my life I’m not actually wondering if there is a love somewhere. I had written this probably ten years ago and the song came to mind after watching the movie, “Wuthering Heights.” It is such a yearning story that, after watching it, I had “Is There A Love Somewhere” playing in my head. I went to search for it in my box of songs and now it has a home on this CD.
“Surreal” is my song for John Lennon. Many musicians have influenced me but John did more than that. Somehow, even though I never knew him personally, he felt like a friend. I know I’m not alone in that feeling and it is a very rare phenomenon, I would guess, for a personality to reach through the “plastic” (in John’s case, the vinyl records) and make people feel that he or she is a friend. I sure hope Yoko, Sean, Julian, and the others in John’s family are okay with this tribute.
“The Ad Man” is obvious. I have written a lot of ads and hosted a lot of infomercials in my years working in radio. It’s all part of the job but I wrote this song just to let you know how I really feel about some of those ads.
“Dreams Of Men And Women” is one of my favorites. It is a song about a dream I had in which I saw children of the future studying us in their history books. They learned that we judged each other based on our religions, our races, our origins, our genders, our ages, our conditions, our illnesses, and, to sum it up, all of our labels. In fact we even hurt each other and declared wars against one another based on these judgments. To these future children, it was hard to understand and seemed so very primitive. It was good to see that in the future we no longer made this mistake and was a very promising vision.
The ninth song on “Signed, Infinity” is “I Only Want To Be With You.” As I mentioned earlier, I’m a sucker for a yearning, pining love song and write a lot of them. This is another one of those that I have always loved. I had recorded this in a studio in the late 1980s but always thought this song needed lush, emotional, strings. So, thanks to the Barefoot Billetdoux Orchestra (thank you, Robin), here it is!
“A Different Wind” was written in the early Robin And The Giant days. My partner, Robin MacBlane, and I had been working hard to create music for children and we took our duo to every venue for children that we could find. We played schools, day-cares, resorts, churches, festivals…you name it! It was a fun and exciting time and we certainly were “paving our own direction” and “doing fine!”
“We Really Did Alright” is a song I wrote at the request of my father. My Dad and Mom were approaching a wedding anniversary and he asked me to write a song for him to sing to my mother. I was never really sure if my father appreciated my songwriting and having him make this request touched me in a way he never really knew because it was a way of giving me his “stamp of approval.” I’ve always loved this song and hope it becomes a standard at wedding receptions and anniversaries.
Okay, kids. Listen up. Don’t let anything or anyone ever tell you anything is impossible! Got it?! In case you forget, I wrote this song called “Anything Is Possible.” And don’t give me this “two plus two will never equal five” argument! This is a song to encourage you to hold on to that passion and to hold on to your dreams and to never give up. Okay?
“One Chapter More” is a new song. When a beautiful story is being told we never want to see it end. This is especially true when that story is life itself. The greatest hope for all of us is that there never really is a final chapter. There are so many signs that everything happens in cycles and circles that we can all be optimistic in knowing that this applies, not only to the earth and the sun, but to our very selves. The final chapter is titled “Love Lives Forever After More.” The wise will realize that reality is realized.
“The Lord’s Prayer” is, of course, from the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament of The Holy Bible. The music is written by Albert Hay Malotte. This song is on this CD at the request of my father. It is truly a beautiful song and I love the way it worked out as a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment.
