Perhaps The Jealous Gods were assembled from splinters of past ''super''groups of decadent (and ill) repute. Or maybe the Gods are just Dave Hill and Jeff Miers, two guys who''ve paid their dues in the indie-rock wasteland for quite some time.
The scene of struggles past was the oft-maligned and slightly cursed Buffalo, NY, a talent-rich and everything-else-poor setting which somehow juxtaposes both inspiration and resignation.
Miers and Hill recorded "You''ll Want To Wake Up Now" themselves. They''ll tell you this had something to do with maintaining control, persistence of vision, a down-to-earth, organic quality, or some such nonsense, and they''ll be lying. It was all about the money, baby, or the lack thereof, to be more precise. "Do it yourself, cuz no one''s
gonna do it for you." A matter of utility that somehow yielded some pretty great results.
That said, "You''ll Want To Wake Up Now" is kinda organic-sounding, and it does lack pretension, despite its not inconsiderable ambition. Maybe Miers and Hill just got lucky. If you know them, you know they probably couldn''t have made it sound like this on purpose. It sorta had to evolve on its own.
The process went something like this; Miers and Hill would write separately, then get together and scrap everything but the barest bones of each other''s tunes, in order to "start fresh." No idea that took more than an hour or two to pursue to its logical conclusion was deemed worthy of inclusion. This, the pair convinced themselves, would keep the album fresh and spontaneous.
Then they flew in Eric Starr, whom the two hapless Buffalonians cite as their favorite drummer, sans nobody. He listened to the tunes twice, took a sip of Heineken, and then tracked all ten songs in one pass. Quite ably, it seems. Before the door hit Starr in the ass on his way
out, the drummer offered his impressions of the music. "I like this," he said with a wink. "It sounds like Led Zeppelin covering Mercury Rev tunes after a few cocktails...or vice versa." Miers and Hill loved this, as they tired of attempting new and clever verbal categorizations of their sound for inquisitive strangers.
This being an artist bio, I feel obligated to tell you all about The Jealous Gods'' influences, in the hopes that you''ll somehow get a clearer picture of what this record is all about. Of course, the band would call this disingenuous; as legendary producer/engineer Nick Blagona (The Police, The Tea Party, Deep Purple)said to Miers and Hill while mastering "You''ll Want To Wake Up Now," inside Toronto''s Metalworks studio, "I think you guys have created your own rock genre with this record!" The Jealous Gods still aren''t sure if he meant this as a compliment. But they don''t really care. They love telling the story anyway.
I digress; Miers and Hill grew up on the Beatles, just like everybody else, and they love esoteric rock bands such as the Starr-referenced Rev-Zeppelin montage, R.E.M., Radiohead, U2 and so forth. They each of course have their personal, and more underground, musical moldings. In essence, Hill brings the weird and trippy, neo-psychedelic stuff; Miers brings the rock and the guitar colors, lover of Mick Ronson and Jimmy Page that he is. The studious listener will pick out of some of these influences, yet will realize that this band''s influences merely helped them (accidentally?) find their own sonic signature. (I think.)
The resulting musical gumbo is the essence of "You''ll Want To Wake Up Now." It''s at once modern and old. It''s weird and compelling, and it sounds great when played really loud. They hope you like it.
