Heres the short version
In the late 70s early 80s South Florida had a music scene
Bands like The Eat Critical Mass The Front and The Cichlids played clubs like 27
BirdsThe Agora and The New Wave Lounge to hundreds of fans. OK usually more
like dozens of fans but it was a scene nonetheless and it was ours
Cut to Jan 2007 and a reunion benefit concert is held at a theater in Pompano
Beach Many people who hadnt seen each other for over 20 years got reacquainted
Two of them were Greg McLaughlin and Frank Rat Bastard Falestra Greg was the
lead singer for early 80s powerhouse The Front and Frank was co-owner of the
legendary Sync Studios in Miami and a renowned noise artist in his own right
Frank invited Greg to check out his South Beach Home Studio and on November 11th
2007 Veterans Day recording began on the McLaughlin & friends penned tune Dancing in the Combat Zone
Various local musicians who had hooked up at the reunion show were invited to
play on the song and McLaughlin soon solicited other bands to contribute their
own songs with a military/war related theme for a full length CD
This CD features a pretty eclectic mix of Florida Bands Musicians but as
a whole it manages to paint a powerful picture of life during wartime in the
21st century
All proceeds from downloads of this project will go to Iraq Veterans Against

Radar O Reilly is 3-piece rock band that consists of
Righteous Richard (vocals, guitar),
Death Metal Douglas (bass, vocals)
Sence*Sational (drums, vocals).
Radar O Reilly has been at it since the middle of 2002
and could be defined more by what it is not rather than what it actually is.
This group is proud of the fact that there is nary a trace of nu metal
pop-punk, emo, rap rock/metal or indie rock (well maybe a slight touch)
to be found. "Classic Rawk" and/or "Stoner Rock"
fit the motif rather nicely.

The Coins - Creepin’ Charlie
Singer / songwriter Michael Molina was the founding member
of the South Florida bandThe Coins.
The Coins were formed in 1979 they performed at
27 Birds
Balkain Rock Club
Gussman Hall among other venues.
In 1982 they were voted Band of The Year by the South Florida
Home Grown Rock Festival.

Friendly Fire plays high energy rock and roll,

Formed in 2004, the band played Florida venues from Miami to St. Petersburg
and released two self-produced CDs,
while at the same time building a large internet following
thanks to a jam-packed website, weekly radio show,
and a little thing you may have heard of called MySpace.
In the summer of 2007 Friendly Fire decided to swim into the deep end of the internet
and now plays exclusively online and in the virtual word Second Life
The parts of Stunner and Kristal Van Hart are now being played by
Case Munro and MacKenzie Rasmuson.
The part of the drummer is now being played by Soft Ware.
From deep in the heart of Cardiac City, barricaded in Superhero Studios,
Friendly Fire is transmitting their brand of rock around the globe, and blazing

Fast Fact: His faithful dog Theo has been to more of his gigs than his own
manager.
Bio: Arlans story begins on a battlefield. Or at least his motivations do.
There are some folk-singers who sing songs of protest because
they fear for their own lives.
Others sing such songs simply to appease their social standing.
Then there are those like Arlan Feiles “
he sings them because he has no
choice. You see¦ there are real roots to his protestations. my business.
The Vietnam War (though some only acknowledge it as a conflict)
left a scar on the Feiles family.
His father had been in the jungles,
had seen the napalms glow, and had felt the Agent Orange.
Living through such times, even the stoutest hearts can be troubled.
And so, growing up, young Arlan often wondered
about the far away look in his fathers eyes
a look which never truly disappeared.
Haunting every moment, the ghosts of Indo-China were a part of his life.
And so, when he put pen to paper, Arlan kept those memories close.
None, he felt, should have to live with such clouds hanging over their souls
If he could prevent it in any measure, then he would make the effort.
His journeys took him to Idaho in August of 2004. When he heard of the
Revolution and its mission, he decided to lend a hand.

years ago, life is short and art is long.

you get the point. Well, Ill let you in on a little secret.
Science is even ˜longer than art.
It therefore makes sense
to devote at least a portion of our short lives
to the longer lasting pursuits
of art and science.
I follow the scientific road under my given name.
The other path is for the Icecold Archbishop.
Im not at all sure if music such as this is art.
But it something that never existed anywhere before
and thats enough for me
And anyway, Im doing all of this for me, not you.
With that said,
the Icecold Archbishop hopes that you hear something
that you like.

Sons of Sappho Jeff Freidman Jeff Friedman is originally from Miami Beach, Florida.
He moved to Boston in 1975 to attend the Berklee College of Music,
where he studied composition and arranging with Herb Pomeroy,
Phil Wilson, Michael Gibbs,
Ken Pullig, JohnBavicchi,
and Thomas Oboe Lee, and guitar with Larry Senibaldi and Jim Kelly
In1979 he received a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Berklee College of Music,
where he''s currently a Professor of Jazz Composition.
Rat Bastard bio
Frank Falestra) is a transgressive guitarist,
bassist and audio engineer who was a founding member in numerous psych,
noise music, and performance art rock bands
of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s Rat Bastard
played guitar in the noted Miami,Florida New Wave group
Myrin and the 2 Wotz.
Also in the early 1980s he co-founded a recording studio in
North Miami Beach, Florida
which existed under different names
and locations for nearly twenty years.
He currently runs his own studio in the South Beach section
of Miami Beach, Florida.
Among his most famous studio credits are recording
Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids first demo cassette,
and serving as second engineer and studio coordinator
on Marilyn Manson
and the Spooky Kids'' After School Special in 1991.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Rat Bastard
was involved in the South Florida Industrial Music scene.
In addition to fronting his own project known as Quayle,
he also ran the Esync Records label, which was distributed by
Dossier Records in Germany.
In 1991 he co-founded the avant-garde/noise collective
To Live and Shave in L.A. with Tom Smith and Ben Wolcott,
and later To Live and Shave in L.A. 2 with Nondor Nevai,
Weasel Walter, and Misty Martinez.
In 1990 his band Scraping Teeth won Spin Magazine''s
Worst Band in America contest. Later he continued in the same
vein with his band The Laundryroom Squelchers
(also known as The Squelchers or LRS).
Throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s Rat Bastard
has booked and promotedexperimental and rock music in Miami,
most frequently at Churchill''s Pub in Little Haiti.
In addition to his annual "Bored Shitless" and
"International Noise Conference" festivals, he has booked hundreds
if not thousands of bands from around the world
including Babes in Toyland,
Mr. Quintron, Melt-Banana,
Costes and Cock E.S.P..
Despite being known for producing,
recording and promoting loud and raucous music,
Rat Bastard also has the distinction of once being named
"Best Acoustic Artist" by the Miami New Times.
The Cichlids
The Cichlids
With Debbie (Mascaro) DeNeese on guitar and vocals,
Bobby Tak on drums and vocals,
Susan (Robins) Bartel on bass,
and Allan Portman on guitar and vocals,
South Florida got its first taste of The Cichlids
fury at Musicians Exchange in August 1979.
They quickly built a large and rabid fan base,
playing venues such as the Agora Ballroom, Tight Squeeze,
the Treehouse, and Premier AOR.
Hearing the buzz and taking a chance on the new punk movement,
disco label TK Records signed the fledgling band.
Their album, Be True to Your School, was released in 1980
with cover shots by Rolling Stone magazine photographer Lynn Goldsmith.
The single, Lifeguard Dan, was backed with Bubble Gum
and the previously unreleased Tourists Are Pink.
The Cichlids soon became the go-to opening act,
often upstaging the national and international headliners
such as Iggy Pop,Ramones, The Police, and Pretenders.
As is so often the unfortunate case when success
brings too much too soon, internal differences caused Allan
to depart not long after the album was released, and Susan
left a few months later. Soon after that,
The Cichlids officially disbanded.
As fate would have it,
the filming of a documentary about the South Florida
music scene proved to be the catalyst for a reunion show
on May 20, 2007 at "The Scene" in Pompano Beach, FL,
with original members Debbie DeNeese,
Bobby Tak,
and Allan Portman,
joined by longtime friend Rob Remias
and with a guest appearance by former Cichlid BarrySeiver,
taking the stage for the first time in 27 years.
This same lineup is currently working on a second Cichlids album
(possibly setting a record for sophomore release)
and plan to continue doing shows as well.

THE FRONT -They were a strange agglomeration of individuals from the start.
It was as if a molecular engineer had somehow created a functional,
living entity using components from a subterranean insect,
a marsupial,
a Commodore 64,
a pterodactyl,
and a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner with a 426 Hemi V8.
One would assume that the various parts couldnt come together
into something that could perform a useful function.
but the parts fit and The Front was born.
Randy Rush was still living at home with his parents,
well past the point when most young men would be on their own.
but he practiced guitar 4 hours a day and could play anything
from classical guitar to the latest Eddie Van Halen licks.
Steve Myers played the bass. He didnt play fancy
and couldnt play as effortlessly as Joe Jacksons bass player,
but the bass note was always where it should be.

Larry Hill,was the bands drummer and recording engineer..
Flynn Picardal was an industrial safety inspector by day
and a rhythm guitar player by night.

both in terms of temperament and the ability to write catchy pop songs.
They all wrote the songs, mind you, but Gregs songs
somehow seemed more ..poppish.. and the most likely to be heard
on the radio. When they got together in the summer of 1980,
it was understood that they wouldn..t play any cover songs.
and they never did, not even in rehearsals.
They picked a name, ..The Front.., that had an economy of syllables
and didnt carry any baggage that would identify them with a particular
musical style.
Warren Tepper soon appeared as their manager
and was largely responsible for them not becoming a well-kept secret.
Warren..s father, Sid, had written some hits for Elvis
(not the Costello-kind) in the old days so Warren had some insights
into the ..biz
A couple of months after they started playing together,
Warren had them playing shows at the Agora Ballroom
in Hallandale. They would frequently get the call as the opening act for
new wavish.. bands playing in the Miami area over the next few years,
including U2 (during their first American tour),
the Go-Gos,
Ultravox,
the Vapors,
the Psychedelic Furs,
Missing Persons, and others.
Between these shows, they would play their unique brand
of aggressive rock at various Miami-area venues
including 27-Birds,
the Blitz,
the Balkan Rock Club,
the Level III Lounge,
the New Wave Lounge,
and Coconut Groves Continental American Cafe.
Their music was an interesting blend of musical influences
that ranged from Devo and Cheap Trick to the Beach Boys.
Many people characterized it as punk or new wave,
but this was likely due to the aggressive intensity and speed
of many of their songs. The titles and themes of their songs
also made some people think of them as ..punk...
Execution by the State.. was about the renewed use of Floridas
electric chair and ..Wet Things in the Darkness.. was
an ironic view of masturbation. One of the best descriptions
was offered by another Miami-area musician who referred
to their music as de-evolutionary, heavy-metal, album-oriented rock
In February 1981 they released their first record,First Strike,
that contained three songs including,
Immigration Report. This song, always a crowd favorite,
presented a tongue-in-cheek view of South Floridas
immigration problem (remember Mariel?)
as seen by the local immigration officers who tried
their best to do the right thing.
First Strike climbed to number 1 on WVUMs playlist
This record was followed over the next few years by another single,
Aluminum Room/Poor People,this single landed in Billboards
"Single Picks"section and an LP,Sideways.
which was never released
The band was amazingly prolific and wrote over 100 songs
during their almost 4-year existence
The Front disbanded
in 1984

Pat Maguire aka STRATMAN
Is a guy whos recorded for major labels
and has been invited on tour by rock legends ,
but spends most of his time playing acoustic guitar
sets for paychecks.
In 1992 Maguire recorded three songs with rock and roll
Hall of Fame legend Dion for Arista Records.

He just sort of sits back in the corner and plays.
"He chooses to just be home and be close with his wife
and just be a family man and keep it there.
He''s not flashy. It''s just all in his fingers.

Pat picked up a guitar at age 12 and never looked back.
His first band, The Meat Department formed in 1966
and worked high school events and other teen functions
in Hollywood, Florida and as far north as WPB
and south to Perrine at the Hullabaloo Club.
With not much interest in academics he dropped out
of South Broward High to play back-up guitar and bass
for a bonafide Samoan Chief/ lounge lizard, Chief Fala.
He was pulling down $300 a week with the Chief
and a cottage on Hollywood Beach rent free.
This was circa 1969/70. A year later he was
playing the Fort Lauderdale club circuit which consisted
of The Button on the beach
The Flying Machine
The Ocean Mist
The 4 Oclock Club
and The She Club
1974 brought Pat to folk balladeer,Pete Harris
they played in WPB at The Greenhouse.
Then another folkster, Ross Emery
asked Pat to join his existing trio.
They became known as the Ross Emery Band
with Pat bringing electric guitar
to their folk rock sound.
The Ross Emery Band was top 20 in sales at
the now non existent Peaches record chain
(remember vinyl?), outselling Jimi Hendrix,
Carly Simon and more.
The LP was the first and last for the band
selling more than 10,000 copies.
Idle Rumors was formed from the Ross Emery Band.
Idle Rumors performed in rock clubs from WPB
to Hallandales premier rock club, The Treehouse.
They split up after 2 years. In 1983 Pat hooked up again
with the late Pete Harris to go on to open
more than 200 shows as opening act.
They were booked by Fantasma and Cellar Door
opening for Jay Leno at the Sunrise Musical Theatre.

Many of their shows were at The Button South in the mid 80s.
Pat went on to be a popular solo act
around all corners of Broward County.
During this time Pat wrote and recorded many songs

He also worked as a session guitarist for Dion Dimucci
with Albhy Galuten producing.

These Floridans throw original tunes in with covers of wildly
varying notoriety,shake it all up and pour out fiery stuff.
That frontman Charlie Pickett''s own tunes often compare
favorably to those he chooses to cover
makes their scarcity on the live LP disappointing,
and using three tunes by the Pirates (during and after Johnny Kidd)
and three written or adopted by the Flamin Groovies
on one album is a bit much,
even if Pickett''s slide work and the nasty
ensemble nearly makes numbers like "Slow Death"
sound newly minted.
(Other borrowings come from
Manfred Mann and Lou Reed.)
For their long-awaited second vinyl outing,
the Eggs took to the studio and cut five songs,
including the great Miami localisms of "Overtown" and
"Marlboro Town," a dopey "Louie Louie"
adaptation that was a local hit two decades ago for
its author, Charlie''s cousin Mark Markham.
(Markham also penned
"If This Is Love, Can I Get My Money Back?"
which is included on the live LP and was also recorded
and issued as a 1982 Pickett single.)
Even without the special charge they get onstage,
the Eggs reel off true-blue high-energy rockers,
further establishing guitarist John Salton
as a first-rate student of Thunders, Fogerty
and Sky Saxon
(not to mention a dead-great slide player).
It''s hard to believe this band isn''t as big a global legend
as it deserves to be.
Eggless, but joined by such sympathetic grunge talents
as ex-Panther Burns
guitarist Jim Duckworth and Maureen Tucker,
Charlie is still burning with unquenchable rock''n''roll fire
on Route 33. The material is almost entirely Pickett''s;
Minneapolis legend Chris Osgood produced it to resemble
an old Stones album from a real ethnic
American perspective. A little bit blues,
a little bit country, but strictly bullshit-free,
the album is a straightforward electric
charge from a real heartlands original.
The Wilderness finds Pickett howling and rocking
at top form with a new backing band. The Magic City
(Miami, that is) Three includes ex-Egg Salton,
whose blistering blues-based guitar excitement
provides fiery encouragement for Pickett''s plain and emotional
singing which, at times, recalls Neil Young''s mournful
country wail. Covers of a twelve-bar blues
and a gospel song, both penned by Son House,
and an electrifying new rendition of "If This Is Love"
settle in nicely alongside such new originals as
"Religion or Pleasure" and the cowboy saga,
"Destry Rides Again."
The CD of The Wilderness contains Cowboy Junkie Au-Go-Go.
That record was also re-released in an expanded edition
that appends the contents of Pickett''s first
two singles and a track from a compilation cassette.

This song is a collaboration between Frank Prinzel and Edward Butler. Performing on this track are Bill Cather, lead vocal and harmonica, Frank Prinzel, all instruments, recording engineering and production. Frank and Ed are Miami, Florida natives both having played in south Florida bands throughout the 70''s and 80''s. Bill is a long time veteran of the D.C area music scene working with Ed in very successful southern rock acts. Frank was a member of Critical Mass, Riff Raff, and Dreamer as well as live audio engineer for various bands and venues in south Florida. Frank also served as technician and engineer at Criteria studios in Miami and partnered with Dan Canary of On-Line studios in Hialeah. Frank, Ed and Bill are proud to support IVAW and the critical work they perform.
