Details:
"...what a joy it is to hear a young vocalist with the power and control of Jennifer Ryan...she brought the audience to its feet."
[James Hale, Ottawa Citizen]

For the past eight years, jazz vocalist Jennifer Ryan has worked with the members of Cash Cow on creating a "whimsical mix of originals, jazz standards and discovered snippets of words, recordings and melodies, rewoven into a daring new jazz tapestry" (Kootenay Express).

Jennifer Ryan is a vocalist from Toronto who has recorded on dozens of albums, commercials and films. Over the past fifteen years, she has built a reputation as one of Canada''s most inventive young jazz vocalists; her rich voice, startling technique and fearless leaps into improvisation have been amazing loyal audiences across the country. Ryan has come by her eclecticism honestly, having studied with a myriad of wonderful musicians including renowned jazz vocalists Ranee Lee and Sheila Jordan, opera coaches the Della Pergolas and Winston Purdy and jazz pedagogues Ron Carter (bass), Kevin Dean (trumpet) and André White (piano).

She also studied minsogak (Korean traditional folk music) and p''ansori (a more specific form of minsogak that deals with epic solo vocal music) during a 1997 year-long working visit to South Korea. Ryan has performed and written with other such eclectic notables as bassist Ron McClure, trumpeter Don Clark, vocalist Mary Margaret O''Hara and guitarist and producer James McCollum (Philosopher Kings/Prozzak.)

As a songwriter, her music has been featured in a number of feature films and shorts, including soundtracks for director Christopher Boehnisch''s 6 Years and 364 ½ Days Later and The Making of My Father''s Death (1999 Canon'' Mouche d''Or Award'' for Excellence in Videography)

Jennifer has most recently finished composing and recording the theme song (Take Me Away) for the soundtrack of a Lions Gate Entertainment feature film (tentatively titled Inappropriate Behavior, to be released Autumn 2003.) As well, she has just been commissioned to perform the soundtrack for Le Ballet Jazz de Montreal''s American performances of Trey McIntyre''s Blue Until June, a soulful main course of solos, duets and ensembles choreographed to music made famous by Etta James. Ryan''s recent solo outings include appearances at the Havana Jazz Plaza 2002 Festival as the featured vocalist with both Cuban jazz orchestra J.G. Jazz Generation and Havana jazz fusionists Karma (the new project from 19-year old alto sax wunderkind Roberto Martinez Pereira.) Solitudes Records has also recently released a jazz Christmas album (Fa La La La La La!) featuring her vocal stylings.

"...sometimes enchanting,
sometimes disturbing,
always entertaining."
[Martin Paré, The McGill Daily]

Jazz provocateurs Cash Cow (whose own album When We Were Little Girls was named ''2000 Jazz Recording of the Year'' by Paul Wells of The National Post) consists of some of the most breath-taking young musicians on the Canadian scene. Ryan''s long-time musical partners - bassist Jordan O''Connor (Don Ross, D.D. Jackson), pianist Craig Harley (William Carn and Lina Allemano, Cate Friesen) drummer Nick Fraser (Owls in Daylight, Justin Haynes/Tena Palmer Group ) and tenor saxophonist David French (One, Pedras da Rua) all "play an active role in the music''s success" (Mark Miller, Globe and Mail).

Together they have most recently taken their irreverent and intimate style to a number of illustrious festivals and venues across North America and Asia: 2002''s highlights included a seven-week, seven-country tour of Asia featuring headlining concerts in the International Artists Series sponsored by the Singapore Arts Council, the Canadian Embassy theatre in Tokyo and sold-out performances at major theatres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City! Home turf appearances range from a two-time showing at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival (in 2000, they opened for the Boss Brass at the Festival''s closing night concert) to Detroit at Baker''s Keyboard Lounge (the oldest jazz club in the United States!)

Their latest release, Found, builds on the success of Jennifer''s debut CD How Do You Feel About That? (Go Play Records!), released in 1996. The album is an informal collection of songs that boldly feature the band''s "daring new techniques" (Richard Bourcier, https://www.tradebit.com): from the sweet longing of Jordan O''Connor''s Wasteland to a raucous medley of Eden Ahbez''s Nature Boy and John Coltrane''s Afro Blue right up to a spirited romp through the Rolling Stones'' jazz classic You Can''t Always Get What You Want. Other tunes include a delicate rendering of a traditional Sioux lullaby, while Jennifer takes over the songwriting reins on The Old Man and the Sea and the album''s title track (both co-written with Jordan O''Connor).

In 2001, Solitudes Records released a jazz Christmas album featuring her vocal stylings - "Fa La La La La".

Autumn 2003 will see the release of a new Jennifer Ryan and Cash Cow album as well as a duo release from Ryan and Cash Cow bassist Jordan O''Connor...stay tuned!!!

==================================
So it''s 2005 - what''s up? Where''d she go?

Jennifer recently finished tracking material for a new Cash Cow album, to be entitled "Pretty Little Things", and has begun a duo recording of standards with jazz guitarist/partner David Haffey (no title yet!) She remains on the Canadian and international jazz scene, although recently recently she is spending time in pursuit of a degree in Entertainment Law.

Expect a new Cash Cow record in late 2005/early 2006 (even little things take time!), the Ryan/Haffey sides in late 2005, and a new practice sometime in 2010 (!)
