At the young and tender age of 16, Candace Benson, known by her close friends as “CB”, has experienced more success and acclaim than many artist achieve in a lifetime.
Her father Charles, a locally renowned gospel quartet singer, and traveling evangelist songstress mother Sharon were the first to notice her extraordinary talent and enrolled her into the Conservatory of the Arts (Norristown, Pa.) for piano at age 4. At the same time she began singing to large audiences in churches and various venues around the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan area. It was obvious to her parents that this little girl had a gift that continually brought crowds to their feet. When Candace reached 10, they united to form “The Benson Family Singers”.
At home, Candace began showing a very strong sense of music and leadership. While most kids were jumping rope and playing tag, she would gather the various other children in the neighborhood to create an impromptu curbside choir with all the glorious fanfare of her Pentecostal church upbringing. Singing, shouting, testifying, and of course taking up donated offerings of snacks and candy from enthused neighbors rhapsodized by the show!
Now 12 years old and competing as a solo artist, Candace welcomed 1st place honors at the Luther Barnes North Carolina Fall Classic and State of Mississippi Exclesisia National Artist Showcase. Appearing on WDAS Ebony Magazine Showcase and Jersey 101.5 Radio with Big Joe Henry, Candace has also been blessed to have shared the stage at differing venues with Bishop Neal Roberson, Earl Bynum (Virginia Mass Choir), Harvey Watkins (The Canton Spirituals), Kings of Harmony, Coco McMillan, Luther Barnes, and Darrell McFadden of The Disciples. She has also sung the National Anthem at the Reading Phillies Minor League season opener. Recently she performed at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King service honoring Pottstown Pa Mayor Sharon Thomas, Judge John Durkin, and Pastor and Dr. Roland Anderson III. In 2007, Jenae Paden personally invited Candace to join her So In Love Tour as her opening act. As an actress, Candace has garnered lead and supporting roles in school and community stage plays such as ‘The Wizard of Oz”, “Seussical”, and ‘Bye Bye Birdie”.
2007 brought continuing education and opportunity for Candace when she was granted a full scholarship to attend the Kimmel Center for the Arts Teen Summer Semester in Philadelphia Pa.
Currently, entering the 11th grade, she belongs to the dance troupe and is lead vocalist in the school jazz band and choir where she also continues playing the clarinet, xylophone, and piano. Her love for music secured her a director position responsible for two of the youth choirs at Second Baptist Church in Pottstown, Pa. where the senior Pastor Roland Anderson III presides.
From her smooth melodic presentations to her high energy performances, Candace’s talents and vocal range continue to awe her audiences. Still a teenager to the core, her writings reflect all the highs and lows of a typical teenage girl’s life; from being fashion fab to fitting in, through boy problems and peer pressure to becoming a young lady. These reflections are evident in her first CD offering, “The One I Praise” which Candace penned along with her mother Sharon, available spring 2008.
Not content to rest on any one musical style, Candace sees herself as a Christian Contemporary Urban artist. Her sound represents the many facets of gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz, praise and worship, and negro spirituals. “I don’t think most people listen to just one genre of music,” Candace explains, “so I wanted to present something people can identify with, listen and groove to and know that God exist in all real-life situations”.
