/// about jesse free

Remember when you were a kid? There was that one question that everybody would always ask you. What do you want to be when you grow up? Jesse Free would answer a singer in a band. Today, all grown up, Jesse is proving to the world that when you set your mind to something, you can achieve it. With the release of his critically acclaimed freshman album Magic Letterbox, he is on the right path.

In a recent interview, Jesse told me ..."today, a band can make an album that is just as good as the Beatles'' Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, but it''s going nowhere unless you make it go there yourself. With that mindset, he quit his job in IT and is now working tirelessly at getting his music heard and to building a fan base. It means a lot to me when a fan tells me that my music had an effect on them. It''s my life and there is nothing else I can picture myself doing. When I look back in thirty years I don''t want to have any regrets."

I doubt that Jesse will be looking back with regret. "Magic Letterbox" is an album featuring a diverse mix of tightly tuned songs guaranteed to be receiving more of the attention it so rightfully deserves. If Maroon Five (Octone Records) didn''t use the name Songs About Jane as the title of their album, Jesse probably would have titled his record similarly, as most of his songs are about a single relationship. Despite this, each song sounds so unique it''s almost as if each tune is a snapshot of a different feeling. Also included are a few one off songs such as Shawnee, a direct prayer to his friend that passed away in college..."I sure hope that you''re looking down on me because I sure am looking up." On track seven, Mashed Potatoes, Jesse compares his unduly love for a girl to the love he hosts for his mashed potatoes. It can only be described as an over-the-top all out love affair and already a fan favorite.

On recording his album, Jesse said ..."in high school I used an 8-track recorder and produced some songs that came out surprisingly well. Once I gradated college and found myself a decent paying job, I took out a lease on some high-end recording gear and set out to make my first real album. I got a buddy from high school to lay down a bed of insanely tight drum tracks. Mark Portugal is unbelievable. He also plays with Baghitit Kuamlo, the bass player recruited by Paul Simon from South Africa for the Graceland Album. After Mark laid the groundwork, I did just about everything else myself...bass, guitars, vocals, and a bunch of other instruments. When the recording was done I still needed to mix the record, but that is one art I called upon a seasoned pro for. Wheatus producer Phil Jimenez (credited with producing songs like the hit single Teenage Dirtbag) came on to mix my tracks and to take the tunes to the next level. Phil was definitely the right guy for me to trust with my songs. We did the mastering at the Hit Factory in NYC which really added the final coat of polish my songs needed. I bet you''d never guess I recorded this in my bedroom."

Using guerilla marketing techniques along with old-fashioned live performances (both full band and solo), Jesse is achieving his dream. His music is reaching out to new fans, holding true a promise that he made to himself and to his family 20 years ago today... "Jesse is a singer in a band".
