I have been playing the saxophone for 26 years, starting when I was a little boy in the United States. I grew up in San Diego, California, where I studied briefly with altoist Charles McPherson. After receiving my Bachelor of Music from San Diego State University, I moved to Austin, Texas. There I got involved in the vibrant Central Texas live blues, rock, and jazz scene. I also received a Master''s Degree in Music and Doctorate of Music from the University of Texas at Austin.
For a while I taught jazz studies at the University of North Florida, where I met pianist Harry Pickens and altoist Bunky Green, who plays an "inside/outside" approach to jazz that I find fascinating. I also attended the David Liebman Jazz Masterclass, where I became interested in his personal approach in playing music.
Last year I recorded my first CD as a leader. It is called Journeys and features former Warner Bros. drummer Gerry "the Thrasher" Gibbs. My music here is influenced by John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, and World Music.
Now that I live in Japan, my band is called the Jim Butler Jazz Group. We play throughout the Greater Tokyo area. On this site you will find band schedule and CD information. The audiences here are very receptive to jazz, which makes it a thrill to play my music. I also have a job every day as the lead alto saxophonist with US Air Force Jazz Band, "Pacific Showcase", located at Yokota Air Base, located just outside Tokyo.
The CD features original jazz quartet compositions and standards by saxophonist and leader Jim Butler and also features recording artist drummer Gerry "The Thrasher" Gibbs. Jim''s approach to jazz is influenced by such diverse artists as John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, and world music.

私はサックスを子供の頃から 26 年間演奏し続けて来ました。去年の 6 月に来日し、日本の美しさに感動し、できるだけ長く滞在したいと考えております。
私はサンディエゴ ( アメリカ カリフォルニア州 ) で育ち、チャールズ マックパーソンと共に音楽を学んで参りました。サンディエゴ州立大学音楽学部を卒業後、テキサス州オースティンに移り住み、テキサスの力強く活気に満ちたブルース、ロックそしてジャズに出会いました。また、テキサス州立大学院を卒業し、博士号も取得いたしました。
その後しばらくの間、ノースフロリダ大学で音楽を教えておりました。この時期に、ハリー ピッケンス（ピアニスト）と魅力的な"インサイド・アウトサイド"ジャスアプローチをするバンキー グリーンに出会いました。また、デイヴィット リーブマンのジャズ上級者向けの講義に参加をし、彼の独創的なアプローチに衝撃を受けました。
昨年、私のファーストアルバム" Journeys "が、前 Warner Bros. から配信されました。ドラムは" the Thrasher "で知られるゲリー ギブス。私のサウンドはジョン コルトレーン、ジミー ヘンドリックそしてワールドミュージックの影響を受けていると言えます。
来日後 サックス・ベース・ピアノ・ヴォーカルから成る"ジム バトラー バンド"を結成。主に東京で活動をしております。 CD やライブスケジュール等詳細はウェブサイトにてご覧頂けます。日本のリスナーは新しいものに素早い反応を見せてくれるので、色々と新しいものに挑戦する甲斐があります。このバンドの活動の他に、横田基地でアメリカ空軍音楽隊の一員としての顔も持っております。
Review of my CD, Journeys:
ジャズからロックまでジャンルを問わず演奏をこなすジム バトラー。 アルバムに収められている曲の中には、曲中、テンポ･雰囲気ががらりと変わるものがあるが、まったく違和感がない。 ジムは新しいものを取り入れ、すばらしい曲を生み出す才能にあふれている。また、その才能を生かす経験も十分に備わっている。
