Few are the thrills that can compare with the discovery of an artist that only a select few have heard of, who travels beneath the mainstream radar, tugs at your heartstrings and makes you really feel something. Prepare to be thrilled as one such artist is Jolynn Daniel.
Jolynn''s musical journey began in Des Moines, Iowa as the child of hippie parents toting an extensive vinyl collection. She picked up a guitar at age 10 and quickly developed a solid affinity for songwriting, absorbing albums from Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Harry Nilsson, Laura Nyro, Karla Bonoff and others.
In the late 80''s, Jolynn''s mother drove her from Iowa to New York City, dropping her off at Washington Square Park with a suitcase, a guitar and $300.00. That day could have been the start of a brief vacation in the city, but instead it was the first day of many that found Jolynn blossoming as a full fledged singer/songwriter. She became a fixture of what was known then as the "Fast-Folk" scene in Greenwich Village, the vehicle that spawned the likes of Michelle Shocked, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, Brenda Kahn, et al.
Still in New York City in the early 90''s, Jolynn was introduced to guitarist Jansen Press (Mary Karlzen, The Mockers, Surf Piranhas) by drummer Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin). The pair headed for Florida in 1994 and began work on Jolynn''s debut CD, Suspended (Rebel Sky Music). This collection of quality tracks found a home spinning at over 100 AAA radio stations nationwide, quickly establishing Jolynn as an artist to be reckoned with.
The success of Suspended afforded her the opportunity to open for national touring artists such as Joe Cocker, Widespread Panic, Joan Osborne, among others. Having toured and performed in venues nationwide, Jolynn followed up her debut with the critically acclaimed release Cosmic Daughter (Rebel Sky Music) on which she succeeded in meshing Rock, Pop, Folk, and Country without ever careening too far one way or the other. Critics often recalled the music of Neil Young, Sheryl Crow and The Wallflowers while lavishing praise. Rave reviews from the likes of Album Network, FMQB, MTV Online, Rolling Stone (German Edition, JA!) poured in, as well as a coveted Spotlight Album Review from the industry''s leading music publication Billboard Magazine, who singled out Jolynn as an artist to watch.
Word around her new home town of Nashville quickly spread with the release of Cosmic Daughter, solidifying her place within the songwriting community. She was offered multiple live in-concert appearances on the major AAA Nashville FM radio station WRLT''s "Nashville Sunday Night" as support for nationally touring artists, as well as appearing on the Nationally syndicated "Western Beat Roots Revival." Additionally, the William Morris Agency invited Jolynn to tour as support for Lost Highway Records recording artist William Topley.
With all that Jolynn has already accomplished, now she advances her artistic vision with the much anticipated follow-up CD aptly titled, Come Closer. Through word of mouth, Jolynn has assembled an eclectic cast of world class musicians that includes Matthew Ryan (Kacey Chambers), Kami Lyle (Ron Sexsmith, Patty Griffin), John Mark Painter (Sixpence None The Richer, Ben Folds), Ken Coomer (ex-Wilco), John Deaderick (Dixie Chicks, Patty Griffin), David Henry (Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse) which is a testament to the regard she currently holds in the songwriting capital of the world.
