We get attached to things. A time, a place, an idea... the world may change around us, but we’ve found our niche and we hang on to it... call it a groove or a rut, it defines us, and there we stay. We drink our favorite beer, drive the best car they make, watch our team play on Sunday, and know that our kids are smarter and our world-view better-informed than the guy across the street.
Of particular interest in this election year, are “All Figured Out”, which might be best described as a political lullabye, and “Partisan Polka”, a mad mazurka of pride and prejudice: as the chorus keeps saying: "If you ain''t one of us, you must be one of them".
"Creatures" includes an antidote for the annual holiday madness in “Holidaze” for those who may feel that humbug is the word of the day.
Even McCabe''s prayers are tinged with irony, and this collection closes with “My Prayer for You”. For a cynic, he prays with a lot of conviction, although he’s clearly hoping the angels have a sense of humor.
