Never having a music lesson in my life, I started writing material in 1997 on a ukulele. In May of 1998, I transposed all of my songs to the piano and by April of 1999, I booked my first steady gig at a restaurant/bar in Orange County and played every week to a very “conservative” yet, surprisingly, accepting audience in Newport Beach, California.
I had always been very much inspired by the piano style of Nina Simon and Tom Waits and also by the very sensual and cool vocals of Chet Bakker and Dean Martin and the defying, poetic lyrics of Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain. I really had no intentions of coming up with my own unique and “thought provoking” style, it just kind of happened when all of my influences (including an influence at an early age in punk rock music) came together and out on to the piano.
My first break came in May of 2005, when I opened for Shawn Mullins at The Roosevelt Hotel. Since then I have sold over 3,000 copies of my “self produced” debut CD titled “Love Songs for the Hateful, ” which I wrote, arranged, produced, marketed and distributed all independently. To date, I have completed my second CD “Twelve” which includes the songs, “Reverend Dan,” “Dumb Bunny”, “Sin” and many other songs which have been requested by my listeners for some time now. (My songs can be heard on many internet radio stations including, the most recent, Pandora..... https://www.tradebit.com )
I continue to book gigs at clubs all over LA and Orange County. I have also managed, in a short time, to establish a nice, large and loyal fan base which ranges from ages 16 through 60 (with everyone having their own personal favorite song).
My music is very unique and is hard to describe or categorize. Last year, I made up a genre all of my own called “Table Rock” (a term that an audience member once called my music, describing it as “beautiful and melodic yet hard and raw and simple. Something your whole family can listen to at the dinner table and enjoy, including your 17 year old punk rock daughter”).
My lyrics are very poetic, catchy, abstract and at times, edgy and dark. However, I also have a lighter side of songs which are heart felt and “true” and have “unforgettable” melodies. My vocals are a bit gruff, which goes against the stereo typical “piano/singer-songwriter” which so often turns off a lot of the “alternative” crowd when it comes to pianists and songwriting, and, in fact, the gruffness adds originality and style to my music which already includes a combination of a little indie, a little pop, a little folk, a little rock and a lot of ME. I have a sound that is distinctively recognized as Kennedy York from the moment the piano and vocals are heard ..…
