Reggae from The Rock
Idlers are a ten-piece reggae/dance band from “The Rock” (St. John''s, Newfoundland). Their unique sound comes from a love for reggae, ska, dancehall and afro-beat peppered with the Celtic music of their Newfoundland roots. With the energetic lead vocals of Mark Wilson, complimented by a solid rhythm section, heavy horn section and incredible soloists, the Idlers have been working audiences into a frenzy since they began playing in April 2006.
Idlers have cultivated a loyal following and are consistently expanding their fan base. Hometown fans voted Idlers as the BEST LIVE BAND (The Scope, 2008) in St. John’s. In May 2008, Idlers were featured artists in the Reggae Festival E-Guide Newsletter.
Idlers have performed throughout Central and Atlantic Canada and are emerging on the National scene. Most recently, Idlers entertained audiences at the Montreal International Reggae Festival and the Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival in St. John’s. During their last visit to Toronto (March 2008), they were invited to perform at 102.1 The Edge Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe. The same event saw Idlers featured on 102.1 The Edge, where they continue to be in rotation. Idlers will be back on the road in September and October, performing venues from St. John’s to Toronto.
Idlers take much of their inspiration from the Roots Reggae music of the mid 1970''s. Staying true to the conscious voice of Roots Reggae, the Idlers music speaks of the human condition, discussing issues of war, capitialism, social and personal struggle. Major influences of the Idlers include Burning Spear, The Congos, The Upsetters, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, The Gladiators, Culture, Steel Pulse, The Clash, The English Beat, The Skatalites, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Max Romeo, U-Roy, Lee Sratch Perry, and King Tubby.
Idlers released their debut full length CD, Corner in December 2007. Not wasting any time, a second album has been written and the Idlers will be back in the studio during the winter of 2009 to prepare their next release.
Idlers would like to acknowledge the assistance and financial support of Music NL and the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.
