Scott M. Katz
Flying High On A Dream
(11-track CD, recorded at Scatland and Mainstream Studios, engineered and mastered by Jim Morris, produced by Scott Katz, Scott Katz (vocals, keyboards), Jeff Baker (drums, bass), Waylon Baker (guitars), Ludim Juarez (strings), Brad Trumbull (backing vocals, organ), Craig Raymond (Bass, guitar), Myong Park (guitar), 39:12)
By his own admission, Scott Katz is a late bloomer to the scene. A full-time husband, dad and businessman, as well as an aspiring part-time songsmith (with a nimble touch on the keys), Katz got hard hit by the DIY bug recently. He wrote, engineered and produces this enterprising debut disc, while lending a consulting hand with the cover art. All the extra attention paid off artistically, as Katz''s work is nearly flawless in sound quality. Accordingly, music this carefully crafted usually falls under the broad, circumspect singer/songwriter banner, as Katz renders a winsome adult contemporary/mellow pop formula influenced by way of Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald-era Doobies, and Chris Rea. Like a lot of music from that era, it''s a little funky and wholesome, as Katz writes autobiographically from the heart (like the lead-off My Own Way), lending emotionally - worn advice (Flying High On A Dream), with an unerring determination to write music with a positive slant (I Believe Dreams Come True and All I Need Is You). Obviously, Katz isn''t after the Wu-Tang market or depending on any Deftones defectors, so his brand of cheerful, emphatic tunes gets nudged into the retro niche, although his tunes are nearly timeless. A nice coming out.
