Details:
Taylor is an 18-year-old student in the jazz studies program at the University of Toronto. Originally from Naramata, B.C, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Taylor now lives and studies full time in Toronto.

Taylor’s music studies began with piano lessons at age 5, and by the time he was 11 years old, he was playing Grade 8 Conservatory level music. He joined the school band program in Grade 6 and was eager to try the alto sax. Taylor’s passion for jazz really began when he joined the school jazz band and was part the school combo. Eager to learn more, Taylor started taking private lessons from band teacher Derry Addison. After moving onto high school under the direction of Justin Glibbery, Taylor began studying, and later performing, with Justin Glibbery and Larry Crawford. Taylor has become good friends with both Justin and Larry and still perform together whenever possible.

At age 14, Taylor joined two youth powered and organized jazz combos. One of the combos played every Friday and Saturday night at a local jazz restaurant for nine months, playing over 50 shows. The other combo was hired by local organizers and restaurants to play many gigs throughout the Okanagan over a 3-year period. That group went on to compete at the BC Interior Jazz Festival in Kelowna, and took home first place. Taylor was also awarded top woodwind soloist for all three years he completed in the Festival in 2003, 2004 and 2007. In 2007, he was also awarded Most Promising Soloist.

Since Taylor was the youngest member of the combos, by as much as two years, most of the other members graduated high school and went their separate ways. As a result, Taylor formed the Taylor Cook Quartet, playing at many locations throughout the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver.

In September 2006, Taylor was a featured guest artist at the Pentastic Jazz Festival in Penticton BC and was given the opportunity to perform alongside many of the professionals attending the Festival.

Last May, Taylor was selected to perform as lead alto with the Yamaha All-Star Band that was featured at Music Fest Canada in Richmond, BC.

This past summer, Taylor organized a major fundraiser for the Naramata Centennial celebrations, presenting his “100 Years of Jazz” program to a sell out crowd.

Besides studying with Larry Crawford, over the last two years Taylor has had lessons with music greats such as Campbell Ryga, Dave Robbins, Phil Dwyer, Perry White, Tara Davidson, Gene Hardy and Stu Goldberg, and now studies weekly with Alex Dean. It is the influence of these and other very talented musicians, along with the support from many, many people “back home” that Taylor has found invaluable in his pursuits as a musician.

To date, Taylor has played over 350 public, private and volunteer performances as a solo or group performer. He is completing his first year of a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Performance, and is playing in and around Toronto with various groups, and on his own.

This is Taylor''s first CD and was recorded in July of 2008. The CD features a couple of originals from members of the band as well as some of Taylor''s arrangements.

Enjoy!
