Somewhere between the viaducts of Van Morrison''s and Ryan Adams'' dreams, Kevin Smith''s "About a Girl" shoots straight from the hip and aims dead for the heart, the kind of album you put on to roll the window down and smoke your last cigarette.

"Nightingale. About A Girl. Casualties. YCBMHT. Kevin Smith-doesn''t he make movies?"

Such may be the thoughts of any uninitiated East Coast listeners still left this Autumn. But if you have ventured in the slipstream between the viaducts of John Mayer''s and Ryan Adams''s dreams, or chanced upon Dan Curland''s "The Other Side" show on 90.1 FM while you cruised from NYC''s Village to Mystic, CT, or tuned your dial to Jimmy Jamz'' "Music For Your Mind" show on 90.3 FM from Hoboken to Allentown, PA, you too have heard the "music that will make you want a better stereo" (The Scope, 6/03) of Kevin Smith, a kind of Americana Van Morrison, ringing out clearly on his debut album, About A Girl.
Released by Crafty Records before a sell-out crowd packing New York City''s The Bitter End, About A Girl chronicles a unique and intriguing musical journey by a young song writer whose star is just beginning to shine. But before you trust him to slip into your own dreams (as he might), or even your ears (as he must), you may want to know a little more about him, just to be certain he''s worth it.
Born and bred south of the Mason-Dixon line, Kevin made his way from the Carolinas to the North East Coast in 2000. Beginning with a brief stint in Connecticut''s The Mystic Five, Kevin played along the Connecticut coast, first tasting the city at a performance in Manhattan''s Nuyorican. Working the pubs, bars, and colleges from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania, Kevin honed his songwriting craft and solo performance through vital live experience. When he finally decided to drop anchor in New York''s City Island in the winter of ''01, in sight of the Bronx''s Fordham University and Manhattan''s Empire State Building, someone was bound to take notice.
Did they ever. By the Summer of 2002, Kevin was in negotiations with Crafty Records, playing regularly in Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, and writing the bulk of what would soon become the album About A Girl. As bootleg shows of his performance on Connecticut College''s WCNI began to circulate, Kevin went into the studio to record, and emerged from the Pocono Mountains'' Mountainside Studios (and the blizzard of ''03) with About A Girl, his debut album of strictly original material. Playing his usual Eastern haunts when the thaw came, Kevin treated the growing crowds of fans to cuts from the then unreleased album.
By the night of its release, the distribution of just a few advance copies prior to the release party at The Bitter End led to a packed house at the little bar between Bleecker and Thompson in the heart of the East Village. It proved an auspicious beginning to a Summer tour that continues to stretch: from July in Connecticut''s Mystic, to August in South Carolina''s Myrtle Beach, and back north to Pennsylvania''s Allentown in September and the North East coast for the turning of the leaves and coming Winter.
Kevin will be touring the East coast through the Fall of ''04, and can be booked through Pinebox Management.
