"Mind-shaking love groove folk funk roots explosion...mountain music for a pleasant revolution" is the genre. Their first album went top-5 in pre-release for 2003 at local radio station KVMR, and its single How Much won 4th place out of 4500 entries in the Unisong International Song Contest. The trio recently won big at the Hard Rock Cafe''s battle of the bands, showing that high intensity originality goes a long way in crossing genres.
How Much is a peace poem that continues to get national radio attention. "I heard Ani''s 9-11 poem, and inspired me to write about my, and our, complicity in creating this here world," says Spencer.
"We think moving bodies is the way to access minds," says songwriter Kipchoge Spencer. The music is song driven.
"To me what makes our music captivating is the integrity of each individual song," says Spencer. "I think of the songs almost as individuals, with personalities that grab listeners and pull them into their world for five minutes."
The band has focused on generating a following that spans the political and social spectrum, having spent years entertaining crowds from peace rallies to corporate tradeshows to international whitewater expeditions. They identify an eclectic mix of influences ranging from Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett, and Doc Watson to CCR, Chuck Berry, Spearhead and all things funky.
Kipchoge''s work has appeared in numerous adventure sports films and is included in the soundtrack of a recent award-winning documentary. The Northern California-based band is sponsored by the bicycle company Xtracycle and the clothing company No Enemy. They toured by bicycle on and off in the summer of 2003, carrying all their instruments and sound equipment on the company''s unique sport utility bicycles, and will be touring similarly through Alaska this summer.
The band''s tour bus, Millie the Millennium Van, runs on straight vegetable oil (recycled fryer grease), and has a following of her own.
