"In 94'' we kicked the scene, our sound was raw by the buffin'' machine! "Since the fall of 94'' The Kingpinz have been more than just your run of the mill hip hop duo. AJ Dove and Deph D have fused all the flavor of old school rap with the omnipresent backdrop of bowling. That''s right bowling. The DJ stylings and episodic lyrics of The Kingpinz promise to transport you to the glory days of the 80''s when a card board box and a pair of Vans sneakers were all we really needed. As a college band AJ Dove and Deph D played the ISU circuit all the while forming the basis for their rap cartoon; "Return to the Howard Bowl".
From Bloomington/Normal they moved on to Chicago where they have performed at The Beat Kitchen, The Martyrs Bar, The Smart Bar, Charybdis, The Greenview Arts Center, and Strawdog Theatre, among other Chi-Town locations. The Kingpinz were also 2001 celebrity guest performers for the Walter Payton foundation (long live the memory of Sweetness). In addition to the concerts and the albums, The Kingpinz have also written and starred in two musicals in Chicago based on the music from the albums. Press reviews are below, so check it out!

CHICAGO READER June, 2000 By Nick Green A Hip-Hop Cartoon in One Act "I roll a 300 game, I strike a B-boy stance," raps Adam Joyce in what he and his partner in rhyme Doug Nagel are billing as "the first hip-hop bowling musical." While Return to the Howard Bowl the first production in Strawdog''s new studio space may not be the theatrical equivalent of ten perfect frames, it''s the next best thing. Joyce and Nagel bowl strike after strike with their script, a simple parable of good and evil wrapped up in an homage to old-school rap, video games, break dancing, and bowling, among other things. The show''s cartoonish premise that the future of bowling as an organized sport rests on the shoulders of the playwrights'' alter egos, AJ Dove and Deph D is a little hard to swallow. But hip-hop is all about braggadocio, and as performers, Joyce and Nagel have the skills to back up their boasts. Joyce and Nagel make the unlikely combination of hip-hop and bowling seem a marriage every bit as satisfying as peanut butter and chocolate.
CHICAGO SUN TIMES July 20, 2000 By Rosalind Cummings-Yeates, Picture this: a quaint coming-of-age play set in a bowling alley, with the actors bowling, rapping and dancing as the story unfolds. Can''t quite picture it? Perhaps that''s why Strawdog Theatre Company''s quirky musical, "Return to the Howard Bowl: A Hip-Hop Cartoon in One Act," has to be seen to believed. Clever and fresh, this show goes beyond mere late-night theater goofiness and skillfully captures the adolescent energy of the ''https://www.tradebit.comm the moment you enter the theater, you know you''re in for a different kind of experience. The walls are covered with graffiti, and the stage consists of a pair of bowling lanes, complete with pins. Surrounded by guitarist Shelto and drummer Ffat Matt, a disc jockey booth is nestled at one end of the room. Chairs closely line the space, ensuring audience participation. Pumping out ''80s B-boy jams such as Public Enemy''s "Can''t Truss It" and Herbie Hancock''s "Rock It," the DJ sets the tone for a rollicking one-hour spectacle. Appearing in shadow, King Louie (playing himself), a sort of bowling godfather, pleads with the kingpins AJ Dove (Adam Joyce) and Deph D (Doug Nagel) to infuse the sport with coolness and not to let it die out.
Herein lies the excuse for lots of rapping, dancing and plain silliness. Doug Nagel''s Deph D, in particular, stands out with enough swagger and timing to make a thoroughly convincing portrayal of an MC. The dance moves are also on target, with the actors doing faithful renditions of ''80s dance favorites such as "The Running Man" and the video classic "The Snake." With hot beats and a wacky spirit, "Return to the Howard Bowl" promises to become another late-night theater favorite, in the tradition of "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind" and "Cannibal Cheerleaders on Crack."

Last year, it struck cult-status oil with Adam Joyce and Doug Nagel''s new bowling-centric hip-hop musical, Return to the Howard Bowl. It ran for 14 weeks and reached a large segment of non-theatregoers. People even came back, Rocky Horror-style, dressed in bowling shirts and shouting out lines...
DAILY HERALD; Bowling shows strike a chord with audiences; Posted on Sunday, July 16, 2000 by Jamie Sotonoff Daily Herald Staff Writer; Rappers AJ Dove and Deph D are on a mission: to make bowling cool again. First, they must rid their local bowling alley, the Howard Bowl, of "Wizzaratz" - the burnouts who frequent the bowling alley video arcades. They simultaneously must struggle to convince their bowling elders that they will safeguard the future of bowling. They do this by rapping, dancing, rapping, bowling from time to time, plotting, and rapping some more. "Return to the Howard Bowl: A Hip-Hop Cartoon in One Act" does not provide a trip down memory lane for former patrons of the legendary but now defunct Rogers Park bowling alley. But the Beastie Boys of bowling throw strikes with their high- energy, loud, funny musical. The script, by Evanston native Adam Joyce and Doug Nagel, is well-conceived.
The show is also free of swear words - surprising in a play about rap music written by young members of a small production company. Audience members line the lanes (those who don''t get there early must stand for the hour-long show), and a team of DJs stands in the shadows and spins tunes that make it almost impossible not to pump your neck forward and sing along with the familiar 1980s rap tunes. The best thing about this bowling musical are the colorful characters who rotate on and off the stage. The good-versus-evil plot line also works, even if it is a little silly. The stars of the show are its creators, Adam Joyce and Doug Nagel. Senior citizen bowlers, played by Gary Price, James Zoccoli and Michael Dailey, are good for a few laughs with their crabby old man humor and energetic dance bursts.
CHICAGO READER by Mary Shen Barnidge; Even those viewers who didn''t see last year''s Return to the Howard Bowl should quickly catch on to the sequel. Among the characters in this live action comic book are Deph D & AJ Dove- collectively called the Kingpinz, the rappin bowlers. LeB Smoov and Smootie Pac are their babe-a-licious girlfriends, and Bagman and Guttapunk the video gaming Wizzarats. Dolemyte is the keeper of the Howard Bowl and Superfly, the Rainbo roller rink. Dan Stuckie is the KISS costumed enemy, who alaong with a pack of superhero wannabes gone bad calling themselves the Joliet Justice League, schemes to destroy bowling by usurping the magical (Bowling) Ball of Justice, leaving Rogers Park to slow decline under roller-derby rule.
The text is heightened teen-age repartee, providing the recitative for a score of hip-hop music beefed up by live instrumentalists, authored by Adam Joyce and Doug Nagel, who also play the Kingpinz. Czarina Mirani''s intricate dances adequately conjure visions of MTV. All told, this is good, silly, high-energy juvenile fun. And with a curtain time of 11:30pm it makes a great finish to an evening of summer partying.

And its pulsating hip-hop rhythms no doubt keep the beer buzz whirring for late-night patrons looking for some high-energy entertainment. Judging from the capacity crowds at a recent Friday-night performance in Strawdog''s new psychedelic bar-studio, "The Ball of Justice" seems to have attracted a following. Nagel and Joyce - who exhibit agile acting, dancing and vocal skills - also star as Deph D and AJ Dove (a.k.a. the Kingpinz), Rogers Park bowler-rappers who come back to the neighborhood after a stint in the PBA only to discover that the Howard Bowl has been torched. ..
