Review in 20th Century Guitar by Robert Silverstein

A freewheeling solo guitar album that will surely appeal to jazz guitar fans. Rebecca''s Dream is the perfect vehicle for Klimak''s fretboard expertise and compositional skills. Inspired by classical masters like Stravinsky and jazz guitarists Jim Hall, John Scofield and more recently Larry Koonse, Klimak originally planned the album as a group effort only to find that the songs sounded quite good on their own. Recorded in California and South Carolina in late 2002, the 12 track Rebecca''s Dream sounds clear as a bell. Klimak''s performance on his Taylor 714-CE acoustic is in a word, breathtaking.

Who is Kenny Klimak and what is this CD ''Rebecca''s Dream''?

A guy named Tim recently emailed me asking: "Is this a guitar-bass-drums trio recording?"

To which I responded: "Actually, no. I''ve played in a variety of settings from an acoustic duo to a ten-piece band (full rhythm section, 5 horns). And ironically I love the freedom of working in a trio. But this is none of those things. I was putting together some ideas for a new project, and I wasn''t quite sure of the instrumentation, although I was thinking of guitar (obviously), a bass player and, not really drums, but more like some sort of percussion. Anyway, what happened is I was recording these ideas using an acoustic guitar just to get the ideas on tape, and one day I thought, this doesn''t sound bad just the way it is. So I ended up putting together this particular project in its very simplest form. Just guitar."

I went in the studio and recorded six of the tracks in Los Angeles, California and the remaining 6 in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

I toured with the legendary Dr. John and played on his album "Gumbo" for Atlantic Records. I recorded with Henry Franklin (Bass Player) on his album "The Skipper at Home" for Black Jazz Records.

I''ve backed up a ton of singers and instrumentalist over the years, but I''ve never recorded or performed solo until I started this project. I''ve found that this project has been both challenging and rewarding. As a result of its undertaking and completion, I feel I''ve created a CD that has a timeless quality about it, which I''m quite proud of, but more importantly, I''ve learned something about myself as a musician and composer. Hope you enjoy it!
