Kristy is an accomplished, classically trained vocalist, with a jazz guitar background, an English degree, and a love of songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, and Patty Griffin influencing her sound and song-writing. She has a captivating sound that is folk, rock, pop, and a little jazz all at once. Her lyrics are confessional but clever, and her double-edged songs range from up-tempo angst to professions of hope and love.
In the past couple years, Kristy has performed everywhere from a packed commons room at Duke University to Ann Arbor''s Blind Pig to Hollywood''s Knitting Factory. Her range allows her to deliver intimate performances alone with her guitar or, with her band, to charm rock-club audiences used to more male-driven, less ''acoustic'' acts. In fact, the Ann Arbor News featured Kristy in an article about the revival of rock clubs in Ann Arbor. Kristy won the 2003 Battle of the Bands (with drummer Todd Waters, formerly of Donkey Punch, and bassist Mike Chiaburu) in Ann Arbor, and she also made the papers in Grand Rapids as a Grand Rapids Press "Festival Idol" during the Grand Rapids Festival.
In 2004, Kristy arranged songs for cello, oboe, and percussion with the help of Alisa Horn, Jocelyn Frank, and Nicole Turney. Ann Arbor audiences packed the Crazy Wisdom Tea Room to overflow to hear the "Femmetet." Kristy also performed on the nationally syndicated Mitch Albom Show (hosted by the author of Tuesdays with Morrie) with Mike and Nicole, and won Mitch as a fan!
Recently Kristy spent some time in L.A. While there, she enjoyed the company of the members of the L.A. Songwriter''s network and was thrilled to play all over town at the Aztec Hotel, the beloved Hallenbeck''s General Store in N. Hollywood, and the Acoustic Playhouse series at the famed Knitting Factory. Now she''s back in Michigan, crafting new arrangements of songs mostly inspired by her travels and planning a new album and new shows all over the Midwest and beyond!
Her release available on CDBaby, "She''s Been Waiting," was crafted with loving care right at the University by Kristy and Mike. Many other musicians, mostly fellow School of Music students, made the album even more special--string and wind players add an emotional touch to "Alone on the Playground," drums and piano add to the pop sound of "Take it Back," and funky percussion and bass give a world music sound to "I think." Press all over Michigan loved the album. Sarah Byrne of Recoil Magazine wrote, "One listen to this disc would send most modern pop divas out looking for voice lessons."
