Star Little Thing were borne of a passion and a chance meeting – a passion for music brought Arron Faye and Grattan Smith in and out of the industry, from Dublin indie band Vena Cava to acting, to flipping burgers, and a chance meeting with Cricky on a street corner in Dublin led to a collaboration between beat and rhyme, and the creation of the musical entity that is Star Little Thing.
Dance beats meet poetry in Star Little Thing’s blend of electronic and 1990s disco, with a dash of pop and a seasoning of rock – nothing is off limits, and in true postmodern inventive style, the music is an attempt to do something new with genres that have already been saturated.
2007 was the year of the lion for Star Little Thing; their debut single, ‘Lovers of Life’ was released amid much fanfare and was spearheaded by Heineken, who featured the single as the foundation upon which they built a TV advertisement for their Green Energy Festival. Accompanied by a home-made video, the release was an explosion of can-do, will do, doin’ it, attitude.
Their debut album, It’s Easy to be Alive, You Just Are followed in October 2007 and was championed as “a refreshing change from those albums that boast a handful of singles and a fistful of filler” (Hot Press), “downright creepy, atmospheric and inventive” (The Irish Mail on Sunday) – and Star Little Thing were included in The Sunday Times’ Style magazine’s top 10 things to watch in their first ever Irish special. Not the shabbiest of beginnings.
But Star Little Thing ain’t cruising off anybody’s faith in them – everything on their album is written, recorded and produced by the band, not to mention self-funded, including the album, and the music videos that have been recorded so far: ‘Lovers of Life’, ‘This is My Life’ (directed by Scott Altman) and ‘Fish Face’ (due for imminent release, and directed by Cricky).
2008 won’t see any let up for Star Little Thing – they headlined Dublin Fashion Week’s Fashion Evolution event, featuring Katharine Hamnett and the cream of Irish trendsetters, and are set to blow the roof off the Irish music scene when ‘Fish Face’ is released – the video of which features international model Laragh McCann, and a few (ver y well-treated) goldfish.
Star Little Thing are true lovers of life – and why wouldn’t they be? They’re doin’ it, fixin’ it, all themselves.
