Like a keen observer of the human condition, L.A.-based Robert Thomas Kuhlmann writes songs that speak of things that touch everyman''s soul -- affairs of the heart. More than a balladeer, Thomas is a gifted songwriter with an unaffected charm that comes across in the sweet honesty of his words and the simple imagery of his songs.
Originally from Missouri, Robert looks to his deep-rooted Midwestern values for the core of his songs and embellishes them with a realism that comes from his recent years in Hollywood. Over the course of the past few years, he has won over audiences through his live performances, which are characterized by raw, yet tender, vocals and lilting guitars. He has proven that he is as much at home performing on a barren stage as he is backed by a full band, having played both solo shows and club dates with his band, the Last American Heroes.
Confidential Reasons is a collection of excursions into the realms of ambition and desire, secrets and confessions, hope and heartbreak. Along the spectrum of human experience, Confidential Reasons ranges from "Colours In The Rain," about unfulfilling love affairs, "Close To My Heart" and "What We Had" about longing and lost love, to "Lonely Girl" and "Someday," which are songs of hope. The inspirational "Follow Your Heart" speaks of the personal struggle to hold on to your dreams, while "This Cruel Rain" talks about the pain of facing reality.
More than just a recording, Confidential Reasons is a collaboration between friends. Robert and longtime writing partner John Doran share songwriting and performance credits, with Robert on vocals and guitars, and John on bass. They are joined by fellow musicians Jerry Giddens (Walking Wounded) who produced and Ethan James who engineered and added additional musicianship. The album was recorded entirely in Ethan''s studio, Radio Tokyo Hollywood.
Robert''s latest release is The R & D Project (https://www.tradebit.com - a collaboration with fellow Manhattan Beach resident Don Jung. The pair co-wrote and co-produced all 10 songs, which was released on Gnashville Sounds Records.
