FARRIS began in Salt Lake City, Utah after traveling singer-songwriter Kathleen Farris found her sound - a fusion of alternative rock, with left leanings toward The Cure and right leanings toward Natalie Merchant, that collides with FARRIS’ thick, smoky voice cooing lyrics rich in visual imagery and storytelling.
Chance encounters if cultivated can lead to defining moments, as was the case with Kathleen Farris’ introduction to the prolific Salt Lake City producer Camden Chamberlain from Cavedoll. This collaboration, started in April 2008, has led to FARRIS’ first single release, "Obama-the time is now for change".
This song, largely inspired by Kathleen’s strong sentiment toward American and world politics developed from her time working as a Federal employee in Washington, DC, is a pre-release to FARRIS’ first album, “We Are Creatures”, expected out in the fall 2008.
Kathleen spent her early twenties pursuing her hopes to become an infectious disease doctor and scientist and only blossomed with her music while at graduate school in London in 2004. She went to the finals of the UK-wide contest rock idols and
“aboslutely stunned the crowd with an acapella opener” - Rock Idols
Before moving to Salt Lake City, Kathleen performed solo for 4 years in Washington, DC and quickly became known for her poignant lyrics, magnetic voice, and stunts like “40 40 40” - an outdoor concert series where she performed for 40 days straight in 40 different locations around the city while working full-time as an infectious disease researcher in DC and West Africa.
Kathleen Farris has developed her career in music out of a world of travel with the highlights being sold out shows at the Hard Rock Cafe in Lisbon and in a casino in Mali, West Africa. FARRIS is the product of this world in motion, the inspirations, the wisdom, and the understanding that only comes from miles of movement.
