About Laughingstock''s "Moth", CMJ said:
"Laughingstock, a San Francisco band comprised of vocalist/ Chapman Stick player Alex Nahas, drummer Eric Gebow and organist/trombonist John Brevik, performs a neat trick on [this] album. The group''s luxurious hipster groove - which touches on jazz, prog and indie rock - nicely foils its lyrical intimations of mortality. Songs such as "Waking World" and "Hole" could come off as ponderous, high-school-lit-mag verse on paper, but instead, they seduce you into a bright, pulsing mirage. One of the best tunes here is the charming "Heffalump," an instrumental surf noir number with a catchy drum beat and a sinister low-end rumble. If the band can keep its lyrics to spare, evocative strokes along the lines of "Moth"''s "Still believing/You can lift the ceiling," Laughingstock could give Radiohead a run for its quid."
