Hard-boiled instrumental surf from Northern California

13 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Surf Rock, ROCK: Instrumental Rock

Details:
For nearly four years now, The San Francisco Bay Area has come to know the name of The Lava Rats. With their distinct blend of fiery originals and razor-sharp covers, this trio of surf musicians has made a lasting mark on the clubs in their hometown and beyond. As one of two bands who helped coordinate the successful “Surfin’ Sunday” concert series, they played with or attracted bands from North and South, and the series even had bands from Massachusetts, Alabama, even Belgium. They have also gotten airplay on KFJC’s “Surf’s Up!” program, hosted by Phil Dirt, as well as KCR’s “A Day at the Beach” with Clint Beachwood. Recently they have been busy in the studio, and in addition to their own long-awaited CD release “Surfing the Magma” will be appearing on compilation CDs both for LA’s Golly Gee Records and Spain’s OmOm records. Their new release is the culmination of a year’s worth of songwriting and months of trying out these songs in clubs up and down the California coast.
Bill Bergstrom fronts the band, and his arsenal of guitars attracts almost as much attention as he does. Kenan O’Brien, the ever-solid bass player lays down the foundation for Bill to jump from, all while finding the darkest corner of the stage to stand in. The red-faced drummer is Taylor Still, an accomplished drummer and percussionist, who rounds out the band by providing the solid beat and his own flair, all the while driving the band with straight-ahead surf chops.
