Reviews of Half A World Away

Le Ann Etheridge may have titled her album Half A World Away, but judging by its sound and feel, it''s as familiar as the folks next door. Backed by some of Nashville''s finest-Nanci Griffith and her Blue Moon Orchestra drummer Pat McInerney, venerable pianist James Hooker and fellow English expatriate Clive Gregson chief among them-Etheridge secures the perfect complement for her winsome singing style, one that follows a gentle path from lilting ballads ("Wasted Too Much Time", "Soft, Warm & Dark") to a to the type of adult-contemporary MOR fare Barbra Streisand would probably find a perfect fit ("The Way I Feel"). Etheridge''s own songs, which make up the bulk of the album, maintain that familiar feel, segueing nicely into a pair of well-chosen covers, Michael Nesmith''s "Some of Shelly''s Blues" and Pete Townsend''s lesser-known "Blue Red & Grey". It adds up to a comfortable fit all around.

North Carolina-raised Le Ann Etheridge has been working around the right kind of people on the acoustic music scene for a number of years, resulting in a debut album that is classy, professional and highly listenable. Time on the road with Nanci Griffith as part of the Blue Moon Orchestra, singing in Vassar Clements'' Hillbilly Jazz Band, vocalizing on recordings for such diverse talents as Richard Dobson, Cathryn Craig, Ian Gomm Band and Mark Germino and performing in various country and pop bands has given this lady much experience and natural poise. She is also something of a talented writer, responsible for ten of the dozen songs.
"Poor Little Misguided One" with backing vocals from Nanci Griffith, is entertaining and enlightening without being preachy or overwrought. "The Way I Feel", instrumentally mixes acoustic, near-folk elements with joyous abandon, building at the chorus into a splendid declaration of liberation. Le Ann has a straightforward vocal style that serves her well on songs like "Waiting for a Train" and "Soft, Warm & Dark" and she also turns in a fine version of Mike Nesmith''s "Some of Shelly''s Blues" and Pete Townshend''s "Blue Red & Grey". Keep a lookout for this fine singer-songwriter and pick up a copy of this entertaining album.
