Georgene Fountain won first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition in 2006 in Baltimore, Maryland. She will appear on television internationally in Japan on NHK TV’s documentary on Billie Holiday in June 2008, and has appeared nationally in the United States on the “West Wing” and in Baltimore on Fox 45 TV and WBAL. On radio, she has been on WYPR in Baltimore and on WPFW in Washington, D.C. where she can be heard weekly on Saturdays introducing the birthday segment on the Andrea Bray Show.
She has sung at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, the Savannah Music Festival, the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival and the East Coast Jazz Festival. She has sung at the Henley Park Hotel and at several venues on Washington D.C.’s U Street jazz corridor including Twins Jazz and Duke’s City and at the Westminster Presbyterian Church Jazz Night. She has performed with Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Larry Willis, pianist Michael Price and bassist Kris Funn. She recently recorded with Larry Willis, the renowned bassist Michael Bowie and drummer J.C. Jefferson Jr.
In addition to jazz vocal styling, she sings classical and gospel music professionally and is heard weekly on WHUR radio with the Howard University Chapel Choir.
