When the young musical duo, GoldenCarr, began performing together, it was in the form of family talent shows. The two brothers, Jeff Golden, 12, and Tom Carr, 16, put on living-room shows consisting of comedy skits and songs, and included the brothers’ two other siblings and a close cousin. Often the only member of the audience was their mother. Together the boys cultivated an outlet from which to express their feelings and creativity, despite the fact that half of their time was spent apart from each other at their respective fathers’ homes.
Last December, the brothers talked themselves into performing at an open mic at Bryn Mawr’s Milkboy. Tom played rhythm and sang John Lennon’s Yer Blues in addition to an original song he had written. Jeff accompanied with a bluesy guitar backdrop that took both songs to a different level. The combination of folksy blues combined with an indie sound got the attention of Scot Sax, who emceed the open mic that night. After a few more open mic appearances, Sax and the brothers worked together to produce the boys’ album “Come Have a Day.” (Songlife Artists)
Tom Carr, a junior at Bonner High School, has thus far written all of the songs that the two brothers perform. His songs depict at times a world-weary view of life and love that one might expect from an older songwriter. At other times, Tom’s vocals and lyrics inspire memories of adolescence as only one in the moment could.
“I just write what I’m feeling at the time,” Tom said. “I don’t try to aim for a certain sound or a certain message. Sometimes a song’ll start with a new riff I come up with, other times the words come first.” Although Tom’s influences include the Beatles and Bob Dylan, he also is inspired by his own emotional reactions to everyday things which he eventually translates into his music on one level or another.
Jeffrey, who is a Drexel Hill Middle School student, has been drawn to the guitar since he was three years old when he began rockin’ on his first instrument from Toys-R-Us. Some years and a few guitars later (he currently plays a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Strat), Jeff collaborates with Tom extensively before performing a song publicly. Jeff names Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, BB King and Led Zeppelin as his musical inspirations. But he was quick to add that “My taste in music changes from week to week.” To Jeff, change is part of the beauty of playing with his brother: “I love playing music with Tom. He’s got a great voice, and when I play him I get a chance to pull off some of the licks that I always wanted to do but can’t when I’m playing alone.”
“I can always come up with new riffs and new stuff. I never feel like it’s the same old thing” he said.
The brothers are slated to perform with two other singer/songwriters at Ardmore’s Milkboy on July 26. The performances will mark the debut of Songlife Artists, a music publishing company founded by Scot Sax.
