Rhodes is a 4-piece rock band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Rhodes’ music blends a variety of sounds inspired by such genres as 90’s BritRock, Alternative, and Modern Rock, all predicated upon classic rock fundamentals, which result in driving modern rock anthems with a melodic core.
Although formally established in 2006, the early evolution of Rhodes began in 1994 when Dean and Derek met in junior high school and began jamming on weekends; creating melodic guitar instrumentals came naturally in an effort to exercise their creative forces. The cohesion between them was evident from day one. After a string of successful jam sessions an invitation was extended to Dean to join a band that Derek was involved with. By late 1997 Dean had assumed the lead vocal and rhythm guitar roles in the band.
After some years of personal development and the release of Dean’s solo EP in 2002 the groundwork for the formation of Rhodes was laid. Dean and Derek immediately reassumed their roles and started to jam material from their deep repertoire of songs. After realizing their limits and their potential simultaneously, they decided to bring in Dean’s younger brother Jeff to provide drums, and turned to friend Dillon to give a full bottom end to their songs. The jam sessions soon became more frequent, new songs were written, energy and creativity were produced, and Rhodes was formed.
In June 2008 Rhodes headed into Powersound Studios, with producer Phil Anderson, to record their self-titled debut EP.
Each member of Rhodes brings a distinct and diverse set of influences to the band. Together these influences are morphed and channeled into each and every note of Rhodes’ music. Dean’s melodic writing style and guitar rhythms, which draw comparison to master songwriter Noel Gallagher of Oasis, are at the core of every Rhodes tune. Derek’s unique leads and driving riffs shower listeners with a distinctive feeling, bringing a mood to every song. The groove and underlying vibe to Rhodes’ music is a direct result of Jeff’s straight shooting, hard-hitting drumming, complemented by Dillon’s flowing bass riffs. All four individuals and their instruments combine effortlessly in the form of solid tunes that induce toe tapping, warm ears, and flutter hearts.
With hundreds of bands coming and going with their singular mainstream success, Rhodes strive to break the mold by writing music which appeals to themselves, and not directly cater to what is necessarily popular at the time.
