Yezve would like to give the impression of being a full, modern band. Chano Santamaria on vocals & keyboards, Dingo Ros on bass, Claude Landa on drums. This is a fiction though being that the latter two do not exist. Yezve is simply Chano Santamaria as writer, performer, arranger, and producer. As the band’s name suggests – Yezve’s music is like a potent cup of coffee that makes us aware of what was already around us.
Quirky, yet relevant. At times bawdy and carnavalesque. Yet a deep spiritual reverence runs through Monocultura that becomes unabashed prayer at times. Yezve seldomly lets us rest on convention, but instead, demonstrates that fusion does not have to be formulae. Monocultura smuggles in Afro-Cuban rhythm and song, unflinchingly sings about harsh realities, while maintaining a pop sensibility that dissolves any pretense. Recorded on home recording equipment, acoustically imperfect conditions, and a 3rd world budget, yet not leaving the listener with a sense of deficiency or lack of substance.
Longtime friend, Charlie Alvarez, is featured as rhythm guitar on the conflicted rock-bolero La Víspera and as solo on the neo-psychadelia funk of Pinche Día. Camelio’s trickster-esque vocals are featured on Bachata Para Violencia. The album artwork was created by Akaixi Gonzalez from little more than descriptions and doodles that were meant to convey the raw image of Monocultura. Yezve invites the listener to take a sip of this potent brew of songs.
