While other students wrote papers, Lisa Alice was recording her first song for a philosophy department seminar. After earning an A for that existential project, Lisa took her melodies to a wider audience. Though she''s been singing since just a wee lass and playing piano since age five, Lisa didn''t find the guitar until college. The lone girl in a college band, Lisa penned half the tunes and lent her voice to the music.

Lisa started her solo career in 1998 and that same year, with those earliest of songs, earned a semifinal spot in the Lilith Fair Talent Search - and the following year, a finalist spot. Since those early years, Lisa has gone a path of her own - a path of syncopated rhythms, alternate tunings, smart lyrics and an expressive, breathy voice.

Lisa has been influenced by songwriting greats Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Emily Saliers; poets Walt Whitman, Sharon Olds and Carl Phillips; the fingerwork of Bach and the drama of Beethoven; the musical Annie; fabulous band and energy extravaganza Poi Dog Pondering; dork king Neil Diamond; and the rhythms and dance of hip-hop.
