PHAME BIO

The Bay Area has been long known for it''s way of unveiling a heavy load of innovative and talented artists. Now make way for San Francisco''s funky Bolivian import known as PHAME. With his musical offerings, Phame tantalizes listeners with a smooth blend of rhythms and languid flow that meshes his native Latin tongue with vibrant energy that the music world not only demands but embraces. And with his hard work, Phame has succeeded in creating his own brand of hip hop, using an eclectic selection of music that spans old school, new school, new wave, latin, alternative, classic rock, the list goes on and on. When designing this unique sound, Phame felt strongly that although he is of Bolivian descent and from the West Coast, it would be limiting to conform completely to any particular sound or flavor. Instead, Phame prefers to describe himself as the SANTANA of hip hop, universal music coming from a latin man''s perspective. His varied subject matter and the way he delivers it demands listeners to shout praise his way. "I just want to put a dent in the game," says Phame. "I just want to make my mark and then let the next person do their thang. Just a piece of the pie is all I ask." With his diverse sound and universal essence, Phame seems perfectly capable of not only helping himself to a taste of the pie, but changing the recipe altogether.

Phame first got into rapping in the late eighties and early nineties because he didn''t see many other Latinos doing it, and he jokingly describes his earlier material as "Brown pride this, Latin pride that." As he progressed, more of his fellow Latinos started entering the scene, but Phame recalls that much of the resulting music was either salsa, high-energy, or bubblegum pop. "Soon there was a stereotype that all latinos did the same thing when it came to the game," he says. "That''s when I realized, during the process of finding myself, that music is universal. I am proud to be Latino, but first and foremost I am human. Eventually that is when both myself and my sound started to evolve."

Phame began expanding his horizons and working with a wide variety of producers. Though he preferred the styling''s of underground hip hop, several producers felt his real strengths lied within the power of his voice, and pushed him to do more radio-friendly projects. A compromise was struck, and Phame soon found himself doing some of what he was urged to do, and some of what he felt he should be doing. "Either way," he says, "it always came and still comes from the heart." These days, Phame is working as part of the Noble House family, which he says includes some of the BAY''s best-kept secrets when it comes to producers, MC''s, vocalists, graffiti artists, and DJs. His crew pushed him to constantly diversify his sound, and as a result he continues to grow more and become more experimental with his music. "I am ready," he says, "to take this music world by storm."

And as Phame''s own musical palette has expanded, so has his audience. With the self-described "brown pride flow" of his earlier material, it was mostly fellow Latinos who were receptive to what Phame was doing. But as his sound has evolved and his range has widened, his appeal has expanded across all races and walks of life. As he explains it, his style is so diverse that he can perform at a Cinco de Mayo celebration, a radio-sponsored event, or a completely underground hip hop function.

It is this accessibility across all boundaries that makes Phame such a breath of fresh air for today''s music industry. "I really feel I have my own unique sound," Phame states,"I know I can''t please everyone, but as long as I am happy with what I have accomplished musically, then I am at peace. I can only hope most folks can be open-minded and appreciate my efforts just as much." "So many moods and experiences are shared in my material," says Phame, who expresses himself both in English and Spanish. "I have grown so much from my previous body of work, and I keep growing each day when it comes to my music and life."

As you listen to Phame''s music, it is easy to see why he calls himself a perfectionist. He doesn''t just rhyme for the sake of rhyming, and he doesn''t write songs just because he thinks they will help him sell records. Mista Phama shares his feelings and experiences in a way that makes it easy to connect with the words and become a part of his music. He makes the most out of every one of his influences and inspirations. He uses every beat and every word as an opportunity to take things to the next level. And the precise perfection of his songs gives the impression that he spends all of his time practicing and perfecting his craft. PHAME aka Mista Phama aka tha funkie bolivian aka LATIN STAX is a strong presence of what was, what is, & what shall become in today''s evolving music industry!!!!.....
