Liz Larin, an accomplished singer, musician and songwriter/arranger whose haunting voice and introspective lyrics have won her international acclaim, has just released the follow-up to her 1999 independent release Merry Wicked. Larin''s new album, The Story of O-Miz, is a collection of powerful and edgy rock songs that are destined to captivate dedicated followers and new fans alike.
While the songs from Merry Wicked were produced in Los Angeles with Scott Spock (Avril Lavigne) where Larin had taken up residence, the songs from The Story of O-Miz reflect the intensity and urgency of the Detroit music scene - home to this native Detroiter. "All these tunes have been written and played here in Detroit," said Larin. "I''ve been soaking up the energy, performing with really great musicians, and enjoying the audiences."
In addition to writing and arranging all of the songs on The Story of O-Miz, Larin plays guitar and keyboards and shares production credits with Roscoe (Sponge, Brothers Groove). Some of Detroit''s best musicians came out to perform on the album with Larin, including Robert Tye, guitar; James Simenson, bass guitar; Chuck Bartles, bass guitar; Todd Glass and David Taylor, drums. Vinnie Dombroski (Sponge) lends vocals on "Pretty Is." "There are some great musicians on this CD, guys who can play so many things so well. They know how to come in and play anything you need. Julie Magsig, composer of the film score to the new Jeff Daniels film "Super Sucker," coproduced one of the tracks. It was very much a team effort and there was a lot of support both musically and emotionally," said Larin.
Larin started writing songs at the age of 10 and taught herself how to play guitar. She performed in church and soon discovered another outlet -the local music store, where she played in small jam sessions and was exposed to different musicians and musical styles. Larin joined her first rock band during her senior year in high school. Larin remembered it as a scary, but exciting time. "My parents, of course, were concerned for me. So I knew I had to strike out on my own and
I left home when I was 16. I would teach guitar after school, then go to a gig. That was how I kept myself alive."
Larin continued to hone her craft and received local acclaim as a member of the duo Press with guitarist and songwriter Michael King, later adding Danny Cox as drummer/percussionist. The band then changed their name to Rebel Heels and the growing buzz landed them a record deal with Atlantic Records. Larin moved out to Los Angeles and the band released the critically acclaimed One By One By One with producer Rupert Hine (The Fixx, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks).
The band toured and opened up for such international acts as Cheap Trick, Robert Palmer, Gregg Allman and REO Speedwagon.
Larin recorded a second album for Atlantic, this time as a solo artist with Test Your Faith. She worked with producer Ben Grosse (Filter, Ben Folds, Vertical Horizon) and invited a host of friends to join her, including guitarist Randy Jacobs (Seal, Tears For Fears, Was Not Was), and drummer Tony Thompson (Chic, Bowie).
Living in California, but missing Detroit''s energy, Larin decided to head back to the Midwest. "I missed my family and my friends and wanted to have a life to write about," said Larin. "My life had become surreal and I wanted to return to playing music. Detroit is a real music town and its reputation for great musicians is right on. I found myself wanting to write and play, more than ever, for the sheer joy of it."
Detroit missed her, too. Larin won acclaim among her music peers and picked up four top honors at the Detroit Music Awards, in 2001 for "Outstanding Acoustic Songwriter" and in 2002 for "Outstanding Pop/Rock Songwriter,"Outstanding Pop/Rock vocalist" and "Outstanding Acoustic Group/Artist." Self-discovery, power, love and existential angst are just a few common threads that run throughout Larin''s music, and The Story of O-Miz is no exception.
Larin admits to keeping some of the mystery, but says the album title is about the story of a woman. "She has a past and she has a future," said Larin. "The story is what interests me. How did she get there? And why, after all that has happened, is she still having this mad love affair with music?" This stunning new album takes Larin to new artistic heights. The Story of O-Miz is the logical next step in Larin''s musical and spiritual evolution. There''s no stopping this talented and passionate artist.
