THE JOURNEY
The Journey CD is the result of my desire to play / hear, orchestrated rock guitar instrumental music that has melodies, dynamics, and energy without falling into the trap of songs with no structure, and endless wailing.
My ear / heart has always been drawn to the Allman Brothers (Dickie Betts) writing and also the compositions from Steve Morse (just to name two). These slingers have far and away exceeded my capabilities, (and are considerably different technically), however, if any of the songs on this disc are remotely similar to either of their styles, it is through the inspiration their music provides. There are many more guitarists in my heart and in my mind, but I’ll let your ears decide who they are.
THE SONGS:
ISLAND GOSSIP: Began as an idea for an intro song for opening a live show where no sound check was available. Thought it would be fun to spotlight each musician as the song develops and end with a jam. Had the riff and groove, couldn’t get band members interested.
ILL GOTTEN BOOTY: Pathetic (?) attempt at an (electrified) swashbuckler piece. Title came from Hawkeye Pierce in MASH.
LATIN HOMAGE: Started with a piano riff that I thought sounded somewhat Latin. I’ve always liked the intensity in uptempo Latin music. I tired to blend some of the melodic mood with a more energetic middle and still be standing at the end.
ECLECTRIC HOEDOWN: An acoustic guitar pattern used for warming up that morphed into multiple electric parts, melodies and solos.
THEN YOU WILL REMEMBER ME: An acoustic guitar piece. Sometimes we just want to be a little introspective.
OUT ON THE RANGE: An electric ride into the sunset. I liked the idea of keeping the same melodic theme, but moving it around a little.
BOXER SHORTS: Was going to be played electrically, but I liked the acoustic demo of the melody so much I couldn’t change it. Was a challenge to play, as I’m not an acoustic picker.
AMBITION: Melody was intended to be played on the sax. Pretend to hear Mr Sanborn or Mr Marsalis and I think we’ll be alright. Nice minor key to jam on. Where there is a short melody break, try to imagine an organ solo also.
JAVA TO GO: Another one of those warm up patterns that wouldn’t go away. I liked trying to create Bass and Keyboard parts that complimented the basic pattern and (hopefully) didn’t screw up the groove.
THE JOURNEY: The first song written when I started this adventure. I love songs that have a ride at the end. My first attempt at heading into the sunset. My wife said it sounded like a journey, hence the name. Thanks baby!
AFTER THOUGHT (SINCE THE DAY WE MET): Demo. I liked the simplicity of this incompleted acoustic demo after the build up of parts at the end of the preceeding song.
THE GEAR
All selections recorded on a Roland VS1680 and then edited, mixed and mastered on a Roland VS 2480.
All the instruments were played (sworn at) by me.
The drum machine (BOSS 660) was played live in sections and edited while sequencing to convey more of a “real” feel.
The Bass parts were recorded direct on a (4) string Yamaha RBX 270. I don’t know if this is good or bad, I liked the color.
The keyboard parts were played on a Yamaha electric Piano into a Roland JV1010 module.
I used a Taylor 414ce for all the steel string acoustic parts. The solos were recorded direct, the rhythm parts were recorded with an AKG 414 microphone.
A Yamaha G150 classical guitar, recorded direct, was used in spots.
The main solo (electric) guitar is pictured on the CD cover, and is my main tool. Its called “The Machine” and was utilized for all the electric parts. I built the guitar in 1993 and have used it exclusively since. The body is based on a Tele and Strat with a maple Warmoth neck that I custom fit. The electronics and bridge are from Carvin. The pickups are coil tapped and can provide the single coil Strat / Tele type sounds, but can also provide Les Paul type power when switched into the humbucker mode.
Also worth mentioning; The intro to the song The Journey was played on a Strat type guitar (with whammy) I made as the prototype for The Machine.
