Details:
In 2005 internationally renowned trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder celebrated the release of his first-ever solo CD entitled SHURUM BURM Jazz Circus, to critical and audience excitement and acclaim. The recording received universal raves from the critics, charted at Number 1 on both of Canada’s national Jazz charts, and was nominated for a JUNO Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Recording,
along with National Jazz Awards nominations for Album of the Year and Composer of the Year.

David’s ensemble is made of some of Canada’s finest improvising musicians, chosen for their distinction
and power as instrumentalists and their unique musical personalities. The debut recording recording was
co-produced by Buchbinder and JUNO winner Roberto Occhipinti, and includes such notables as Barry Romberg, Perry White, Rob Clutton and Matt Brubeck. The compositions incorporate influences from Hard Bop and Middle-Eastern tradition, infused with twisted film-Noir scores, open free blowing and effervescent cartoon music, resulting in an "an idiosyncratic, accessible gumbo" (Toronto Star). The strong
melodic content and the musicians’ passionate performances engage listeners in exploring the tussle between chaos and order.

Buchbinder has enjoyed a rich and multi-faceted career that spans world music over more than 20 years with his bands the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, Medina, and Roma Brass Band. His latest band creation, Odessa/Havana, has had intense attention from fans and media in its first year of existence.

Coincidently, Odessa/Havana was created out of the chance meeting of Buchbinder and Cuban piano genius Hilaro Duran when both were attending the 2006 JUNO Awards for their own album nominations. In addition Buchbinder remains very busy with the composition of music for film, radio and TV programs, dance troupes and theatre presentations. He has toured internationally, recorded extensively on his
own and other’s projects and has studied with some of the biggest names in the jazz world.
