I have to admit I love the Christmas season as much now as I did growing up in a small town in Alabama. Each year, as I watch it through the eyes of my kids, I can recall my own childhood vividly. It may sound a bit corny, but I can practically smell the cedar tree we chopped in the woods behind the house; I can taste the homemade biscuits Mother made me for breakfast; and I can feel the anticipation and excitement of finally getting to open the presents. However, my most treasured Christmas memories are wrapped up in music: those wonderful, old carols we sang at church and around the piano at home. That was, and still is, the defining element of the season. The music of Christmas transports us to a warm place, makes the gatherings festive, and gives meaning to the message of the season: peace, and goodwill to all.
It''s true most of these carols have been arranged hundreds of times, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of trying to make them sound fresh. The word ''image'' evokes a nostalgic, gather-round-the-fire feeling, and that''s what many of these arrangements do. I let my mind wander wherever it wanted to go as I worked on these, and the result is somewhere in my usual world of jazz-meets-classical, with a few tone clusters thrown in. Jane Holstein, my editor, encouraged me to include some newer titles, and I''m glad she did. The Birthday of a King, modeled loosely after a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody, turned out to be the most fun and lighthearted arrangement in the collection.
This CD is for my brother, Jerry; my sister, Jane; and their families. And especially for Susie, Charlie, Sawyer, and Jesse. May all your Christmases be bright ... and filled with music!
