Details:
This Life In Exile started in a Ukrainian village in 2002 where Scott Dash was serving in the U.S. Peace Corps. He recorded his first songs there onto a cheap, handheld cassette player with an equally cheap acoustic guitar. This Life In Exile is still a one-man band, though now Scott is surrounded by more instruments and by generous friends who lend their time and talents.

"Rise and Fall" is a 39-track, two-hour-eleven-minute historical fiction bedroom rock opera that takes place in and spans the length of the former Soviet Union. It is inspired by the time Scott has spent in that part of the world and also by people and experiences there and in the United States. On the album, Scott plays 6- and 12-string acoustic, electric, and bass guitars, drums, percussion, organ, and keyboards, and also handles vocals, lyrics, and production. In addition, Brian Buchner plays drums on songs 6 and 7; John Hoogendyk plays drums on 16 and 22; Mathew Jannol contributes additional lyrics on 3, lends additional guitar on 4, and plays lead guitar on 30; Joyce Liu sings on 8, 22, 36, and 37, provides lyrics on 22, and contributes additional lyrics on 37; Devon McMahon plays guitar on 21; Daniel Perell plays clarinet on 13 and 29; and Sarah Schuh plays trumpet on 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 37.

This Life In Exile is giving all profits from this album to three causes: the doctoral education of a Ukrainian friend lifting herself and her family out of poverty and pursuing her dreams; the physical recovery of a former colleague from a debilitating stroke; and the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig''s Disease, in memory of the recently passed mother of a friend and fellow graduate student.
