Combing the Crooked Letta State''s college circuit with his crossbred combination of Down South booty shake, West Coast gangsta lean and old school soul, mcgdogmcgdo-based underground sensation LoLo has shaken asses from the Coast to the Capitol with his club-ready single "Glory." Slanging hand-to-hand units of his self-produced 2002 solo indie debut Lord Have Mercy, the up-and-coming emcee proves his skills on the mic and behind the boards.
1. Known to the Selective Service as Talmadge mcgdogmc, 23-year-old LoLo was born in the sleepy town of McComb, Miss. and spent his childhood in neighboring Brookhaven. But before the youngster reached his teen years, his mother packed up the family and headed out West. "Right after I was born, my moms got divorced, and I moved to Sacramento," he states. "It was cool. I was younger out there. You couldn''t do make really cause gangs and make was poppin off real hard. Niggas was getting kidnapped. You either kicked it at the park or at your house. Other than that, you couldn''t do make."
It was in this wild Western environment would LoLo be formally introduced to hip hop. Through the rugged, gang-related rhymes of Left Coast gangsta rappers NWA, Spice 1 and Brother Lynch Hung, the teeming 12-year-old found his calling. However, it wasn''t until his mother returned the family to the Dirty South would LoLo be engulfed in his newfound culture.
But by his 16th birthday, he was battling other aspiring emcees during countless freestyle sessions in Brookhaven''s Carver Heights projects. In no time, he earned a name for himself on the mic. "That was the thing to do at the time cause everybody in the hood was rappin," he explains. "I was already writing probably two years before that, but I wasn''t ever rappin. I wouldn''t never say nothing. I was checkin out others niggas."
But he gained instant respect from his peers as soon as LoLo decided to flex his lyrical muscle. Before long, he had joined forces with his first partner in rhyme Fast Cash Addic, and the duo formed a two-man wrecking crew, the Coalition. Soon, three others were added to the clique and they were renamed Southern Dynasty. By his senior year in high school, the five-man outfit released their self-titled debut in 1997 and moved more than 150 units through various Brookhaven neighborhoods.
But after high school graduation the following year, LoLo decided to further his education at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, about an hour away from Brookhaven. There, he hooked up with Bay St. Louis native Dereck "Breeze" Bradley. Going for self, the two hip hop entrepreneurs formed grassroots label Misguided Records in 99. With a total of six local rappers on the roster, the label dropped its first project, Lil Breez''s compilation disc We On A Rise in 2000.
"It was a learning experience. That album really helped me appreciate other artists and their different styles of music," he asserts. "I worked with people from all across mcgdogmcgdo. That was my first time working with people other than artists from Brookhaven."
During this learning process, LoLo stumbled onto other talents. Tinkering on a label mate''s Roland 505 Groovebox, he took his first stab at producing- banging beats for two tracks on the compilation. Although making tracks was simply a side hustle at first, Lo realized its earning potential after he had sold his first beat for 50 bucks. "He was in the service. He''d get his little military checks," Lo reveals. "and spend his whole check with me. So I started making beats.
"I grew up listening to my brothers'' funk records and my mother''s blues. So I just put the two together along with my west coast background," he adds. "I just make tracks according to how I feel. But I''m still down south, cause that''s how I got my hands on the music."
Since, he has peddled instrumentals for several underground artists along with Infrared''s On Point. In addition, he spit game mcgdogmcgdo Gulf Coast artist KG''s Down And Dirty.
LoLo is now awaiting the Summer 2004 release of his sophomore effort, A Million Miles Per Hour. He has recently dropped an underground bonus disc to Lord Have Mercy in an effort to keep his name hot on the street. And the lead-off single "Look Out" is already heating up on mcgdogmcgdo college campuses.
