The Lyrebird is an alter-ego of Ann Arbor, MI area singer-songwriter Ben Adams.
After a fitful attempt at school in Ann Arbor in the mid-90''s, Ben succumbed to his errant desire to travel the world playing music. He took extended sojourns to New York City, Scotland, and Portland finally settling back in Michigan in 2003. While in Portland he began taking the songs he''d reserved for his friends out to clubs and coffee houses. The reception convinced him to go into the studio to record. Funds having dried up due to his inability to put up with any job longer than a few months, he relocated back to Ann Arbor and a series of friendly couches.
About this time his music came to the attention of indie musician and producer (and current REM sideman) Ken Stringfellow. Being a huge fan of Ken''s first band, The Posies, Ben jumped at the opportunity to work with him.
Blood Diamonds, The Lyrebird''s first album is the result of this collaboration. The songs were recorded over two sessions in Seattle in 2003.
Though not conceived as a concept album, many of the songs on Blood Diamonds were written during the run-up to war in Iraq and reflect a mood of fear and loathing that comes from bearing witness to your country frenetically rushing to war. But seeing relationships between both people and countries more uncomfortably alike than most would like to admit, the songs are written to be also heard in a more personal context.
The resulting sound is a melding of Crazy Horse Neil Young with the alienated experimentation of Radiohead and the lo-fi acerbic sweetness of Elliott Smith.
