Details:
The Marianna Prosperity started out as a three-piece band from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania called Elven. This band featured the talents of Jim Hufnagel (drums), Cory Matchett (bass), and Corey Ballard (guitar, vocals). While Elven was seemingly on hiatus, Ballard dropped out of college and drifted away to concentrate on visual arts. Hufnagel and Matchett went on to start the experimental band The Affected, and run Hufnagel’s recording studio (Big Boot Studios). Ballard realizing that he had a lot of loose ends to tie up, eventually (and out of necessity) started writing songs. He wrote about the recent past, the people he had left behind. He recorded some 4-track demos of these songs. It was in the spring of 2000 that Ballard started writing with his new friend Chip Harrington. That winter, Ballard approached Hufnagel about recording some tracks for a studio project. Always interested in recording jobs, he agreed to not only record, but also play drums on the project. By the spring of 2001, they were writing for the Salvage EP based on Ballard’s demo tapes. Naturally, Matchett was asked to play bass on the album. It was while on a trip home from a friend’s house that Ballard and Harrington decided to become a band. At the time of their conversation they were getting off the Marianna/Prosperity exit on I-79 and driving through the small town of Prosperity. Now they had a name. During the recording, Affected frontman and studio partner moved to San Francisco to pursue his interest in filmmaking. This left Hufnagel and Matchett free to devote more time to the new project. The Salvage EP was completed late that summer and released independently on February 7th 2002. The writing style remained of Ballard taking the lead creating lyrics while collaborating with Harrington. They bring the basics to the table at practice to glean Hufnagel and Matchett’s polishing touches. Matchett describes this as “taking their creative freedom in the rearing of the song by laying down a little groove to accent the highlights of the song.” Thereby, each song having a piece of each of them involved. In the spring of 2002, they were headed to Washington, D.C. to be interviewed and play live on WRGW FM at George Washington University. Later that summer, the EP began getting play on WXDX FM, a popular Pittsburgh radio station. The Marianna Prosperity was able to follow up in the fall of 2002 at George Washington University by playing for their Freshman Orientation carnival with Sev. They had also obliged two invitations to play on the Morgantown Sound, a show on West Virginia University’s radio station, U92 FM. The Marianna Prosperity has been working on their first full-length album, spending many exhausting hours at Hufnagel’s Big Boot studios recording as much as their busy schedules allow.
