Maya Marin took up classical piano at five and played competitively until the age of 18. She began songwriting as a teen, but at that time chose instead to enter college as an English Major - which led to a short-lived (and unhappy) career as a technical writer of software/hardware manuals.

In mid 1999, inspired by a mixture of various musical styles (i.e. alternative rock, folk, pop, adult contemporary) she and her brother Joseph Edward produced a demo of her original music. Though somewhat rough, this demo still managed to garner the attention and praise of several record producers and other music industry professionals.

In late 2001, she teamed with producers/musicians Jean-Pierre Durand and Liza Carbé to record her independently released debut album, Waiting Here (December 2002). Durand and Carbé, founding members of the Billboard charting Nouveau Flamenco ensemble Incendio, brought their enormous talent and years of experience with various musical genres and artists (Lindsey Buckingham, Sarah Hickman, Leon Patillo, Tina Turner) to add a whole new dimension to Maya''s sound.

Other contributing musicians are viola player Novi Novog (Prince, Michael Jackson, Marianne Faithfull, Sophie B. Hawkins, Chantal Kreviazuk, Edie Brickell, Terence Trent d''Arby), drummer Joe Shotwell (Eric Idle''s touring troupe). Film/television composer Mark Governor (who is also the composer of the critically acclaimed musical version of Nathaniel Hawthorne''s The Scarlet Letter) also lends his talent to the record, producing one track on the album (for which he also wrote a string arrangement).

The musical influences for Waiting Here are as eclectic as the album itself, running the gamut from Kate Bush and Aimee Mann to Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.

Maya''s music is characterized by pure, ethereal vocals, sensitive lyrics, and strong melodies. Her accessible themes/lyrics are honest and confessional without being wordy or cryptic. Her style has been compared to such contemporary artists as Paula Cole, Dido, and Sarah Mclachlan.
