MP3 Meteorite - ROCK: Funk Rock

The debut release from the tightest, sharpest quartet in the Southeast (USA). Serious grooves (think Meters, MMW, Weather Report, Galactic) paired with skillful songwriting/singing. Really.

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Funk Rock, ROCK: Jam-band

"I am always looking for new and different bands from all around the USA, really all around the world, and occasionally I''ll just get something out of the blue, a package, and I''ll open it up and pop it in the CD player and hear something and say, ''Hey man, I gotta put this on the air!'' "

-Russ Davis of XM Satellite Radio announcing Meteorite''s song "ZeeBop" on Beyond Jazz (channel 72)

Meteorite is

Sam Shober - guitar, vocals
Gary Wheat - saxophones, vocals
Taylor Propp - bass, vocals
Michael Glaser - drums, vocals

Meteorite grew out of a straight-ahead jazz standards group that Sam formed in Birmingham, Alabama. Gary, Michael and Taylor had each worked with Sam in his jazz outfit, and when Sam decided to create a band that would feed his appetite for jazz AND rock/ funk, the combination of these four musicians stuck.

Meteorite spent their first year as a cover band, paying tribute to Stevie Wonder, MMW, Charlie Hunter, Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Traffic and especially The Meters, the legendary four piece New Orleans funk band.

As their live sound came together, the Meteorite boyz began to create a body of original work, and it was at this point that the word started getting around Birmingham: Here was a band that could wow you with truly sophisticated, yet highly tasty songwriting and instrumental prowess, OR just make you shake your butt for an hour nonstop if the situation required. Armed with a bunch of great original material and a tireless live show, Meteorite spent their second year staking their claim on Birmingham''s club scene.

Next logical moves: 1) Get out of town, 2) Make a record.

Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Chattanooga, Athens, Auburn, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa - these have all become stops for Meteorite over the last year and a half, making friends and fans doing shows with groups like the Gamble Brothers Band, ulu, Col. Bruce Hampton & the Code Talkers and Robert Walter''s 20th Congress, and jamming onstage with special guests like New Orleans piano giants Henry Butler and Victor Atkins (Los Hombres Calientes, Elvin Jones). And their debut CD, released in the spring of 2004, is providing more fuel for the fire with feature spots on XM Satellite Radio and https://www.tradebit.com. A constant buzz in their hometown, new venues being added to the travel schedule and some exciting headlining dates under their belt (Birmingham''s City Stages festival and WorkPlay Theatre among them)- all damning evidence that the word on the street is good where Meteorite is concerned.
