"Ever upward." Those two words best describe this Syracuse, New York four piece modern rock band. The words describe their work ethic and they chronicle the band''s many successes since forming in 2002 including the Brian Bourke Award for Best New Artist at the 2004 Syracuse Area Music Awards.
Merit is Brenna Merritt on vocals, Wil Mecum on bass, Hal Appleby on guitar and Jeff Nelson on drums. The members met while studying at Syracuse University. In May of 2002, they started writing some songs and recorded a demo. Since the release of that disc, their career has climbed ever upward.
Within a year, the demo got Merit signed to Aux Records, an independent start-up label based out of Syracuse. The buzz about Merit spread throughout Central New York, propelling them to open for acts like Liz Phair, Thousand Foot Krutch, Freya, Stage and Bif Naked.
In April of 2004, Merit released their first full length album entitled "When We Fight." It gained respect among local critics, and has been notably admired as an eclectic album drawing influence from pioneer modern rock bands like Stone Temple Pilots, emotional, acoustic driven acts like Ani DiFranco and pounding rhythm mavens like Sevendust.
When We Fight''s lead off track, "Man on a String," became the immediate hit, breaking into the top ten most played songs on K-Rock (WKRL) in Syracuse and has since gone on to more than 400 spins at the station. The indie band, fueled by a little indie label, is now infiltrating the radio market, being spun on college and commercial radio stations on the East Coast. Nationally, Merit is receiving spins on XM Satellite Radio, as part of their "Artist Unsigned" program. In less than a year and without major distribution the band has sold nearly two thousand copies of "When We Fight" and the sales numbers keep growing.
