"The band''s newest release, Vessel, is light years beyond that first record, leaving one to wonder exactly what happened in the interim--and what could happen next."

Bassplayer Magazine
"Vessel is packed full of in-the-pocket grooves, clever turns of harmony, and elegantly interwoven rhythms."

"...''musician'' is a word and a concept that oozes from every bead of sweat the members of this Richmond quartet leave on stage.
This greatly matured incarnation of Modern Groove Syndicate has produced a brilliant album that ranges in flavor from jazz to dub and from Mahavishnu Orchestra to Sesame Street while never losing touch with its foundations in the steamy funk of New Orleans."

C''Ville Weekly
"The record is bootysmackalicious, and it will inspire your quest to see them live."

Richmond Jazz Society
"The Modern Groove Syndicate''s "Vessel" is
smokin''!! I don''t care what ''they'' call it - it''s
good music. It''s engaging, intelligent and
so what if you can dance to it?! It''s a Jazz
vehicle which takes the listener on a fantastic
voyage into elements of funk, rock, African-
Latin rhythms, and much more! Best wishes
to Modern Groove Syndicate - well done!"

NineVolt Magazine
"5...Get It Today"
WHO > A funky instrumental jazz
quartet from Richmond
SOUNDS LIKE > MGS has a real
crossover appeal. The heavy use of
organ recalls early Traffic recordings.
IS IT ANY GOOD > JC Kuhl''s sax
solos rip, Daniel Clarke''s heavy key-
boards rock like Ritchie Blackmore
guitar chords, and Joel DeNunzio
pounds the drums the way Miami
Dolphins running back Ricky Williams
hits the line of scrimmage. In other
words, their individual skills are un-
deniable. MGS''s 13 highly charged
compositions are surprisingly strong.

Smoky Mountain News
"You either like funk or you don''t. If you dig, MGS has chops to burn."

Pause Record
"...the Modern Groove Syndicate''s Vessel is a still viable candidate for New Orleans royalty, despite the groups Virginis womb."

Richmond Music Journal 2/04
"If you aren''t biting your lower lip and wiggling your bottom as soon as you put on Vessel you''re colder than a fish stick."

"The performances on this entirely instrumental disc are super-tight; this is without a doubt one of the most accomplished groups of musicians you are likely to have heard in some time...Overall this disc is a super-strong collection of fantastic party tunes that ooze sophistication, yet are impossible to resist dancing along with."

Style Weekly
"While the foursome still knows how to get a good groove going, it''s in a more restrained context on this album. While the first, self-titled release was a solid effort, this one shows maturity and is a slicker package https://www.tradebit.com tight playing deserves more attention and this album might just get it."

"...Vessel is a monster of an album -- energetic, technically mind-boggling and mercurial. Need some more adjectives? Add playful and unremittingly danceable. After the particularly wicked drum solo that finishes "Exs & Hos" the band erupts into elated laughter. A voice in the background asks, "Does everybody feel pretty good about that?"
