MANTRA YOGA

The media that we use for contacting different deities or the archetypical energies they represent is called Mantra. Literally in Sanskrit “Mananaat Traayate Iti Mantra”, means a powerful formula of few words with profound significance that bestows a desirable result by constant contemplation and repetition. Every letter of a Mantra is a condensed form of energy. The sound of each letter is not merely an empty form of verbal manifestation or phoneme. It is energy that is made to express itself in a particular way. The utterance or chanting of the Mantra produces a new form of energy which gets infused into our system, because it has arisen from our own mind, thought and recesses of our own Being. Mantra releases energy, not only inside our own personalities, but also in the outer atmosphere of which we form part. Through the repetition of the Mantra in the meditation we can contact and pray to the deity of choice or the archetypical energy represented. According to Maharishi Patanjali, the author of Yoga Sutras and many other authors from other schools and currents of Yoga, repetition and contemplation of a Mantra is an immense help in any kind of meditation, because it leads an individual towards the pinnacle of Yoga, known as Samadhi; the state of union with the Absolute. All the Mantras are preceded by Om. Om is Nada Brahman. Brahman is the Absolute. Nada is sound. Sound is a vibration. Om is the primordial sound. Sound is the first manifestation of the Absolute.

The Mantras selected in this CD are dedicated to the Lord Ganesh. In Hindu mythology Ganesh is the cosmic principle of auspiciousness, and destroyer of all kinds of obstacles that impede the achievement of a desired goal. Therefore before starting any task, we always ask for the grace and blessings of Ganesh by reciting the Ganesh Mantras. At the end, Shanti Mantras invoking peace are traditionally recited to conclude the meditation.

Shanti Mantras bring peace to our being by freeing us from all kinds of Taapas or sufferings. The reason for reciting the word shanti or peace three times is because there are three kinds of Taapas or sufferings:

1. ADHYAATMIKA TAAPA (subjective trouble): Suffering arising out of oneself, such as hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, ignorance, disease and death.
2. ADHIBHAUTIK TAAPA (objective trouble): Suffering coming from other beings, such as ferocious animals, poisonous creatures and wicked human beings.
3. ADHIDAIVIKA TAAPA (Heavenly trouble): Suffering caused by extreme natural forces such as thunderbolts, storms, floods, heat, cold, earthquake, volcanoes, etc.

Therefore, reciting three times OM SHANTIH, SHANTIH, SHANTIH frees us from all three kinds of Taapas or sufferings.

This CD is the result of the insistence of students and friends who have been asking me to record some simple and traditional chanting of Mantras for meditation. I hereby thank them for their insistence.

I would like to acknowledge and express my gratitude to Miguel Alcázar and his wife Agatha Nett, Kären Anderson, Ann Moxey, Adrian Muñoz and my wife Uma Dimri, who gave their valuable time and thoughtful suggestions for the production of this CD.

Pandit Shashi Dhar Dimri was born in the foothill of Himalaya frontier with Tibet. His family being the priest of the Sri Badri Nath temple one of holist shrine of the Hindu had privilege to meet a great saint and musician Sri Swami D. R. Parvatikarji in BadriNath, who in his early childhood sowed the seed of music in him. Traditionally being a musician family, his uncle Pundit Mahidhar Dimiri initiated him in Tabla at the age of five on the auspicious day of Sri Basant Panchami. Music, not as an entertainment, rather a means of spiritual goal lead him to holy Ashram of His Holiness Sri Swami Sivananda, widely known as Sivananda Ashram, Divine Life Society, Rishikesh Himalaya. There he had the opportunity to meet many great saints and studies the Yoga, Vedanta and music for eighteen years under the guidance of H. H. Sri Swami Chidanandaji H.H. Sri Swami Krishnananda ji and H.H. Sri Swami Nadabrahmanandaji.

In 1982 on an invitation of a group of doctors, who visited the Ashram, he came to Mexico. The intention of this visit was to make them acquainted with philosophy and practice of Yoga and Meditation, and its application as a therapy on the patients suffering from neurological and cardiovascular disorder, obese and hypertension. The experiment was a great success, the difference that an amount of medicine could not do, there a few simple posture of Yoga, respiration, meditation and relaxation was able to do. During the meditation and relaxation, he would chant the Mantras, and subsequently patients would go in profound relaxation, thereby with an experience of lightness, vigor and harmony in their entire personality. For this reason, on the insistence of the students, this disc of Mantra Yoga came to an existence, so that any one while listening of these Mantras may meditate and relax.

This CD is a live recording playing few instruments in, and intentionally avoiding the use of other musical instruments so that during the meditation concentration may not get diverted to music rather Mantras. The text was prepared in original Sanskrit and its transliteration for them those who want to chant it in Sanskrit, as well as the translation in English and Spanish to understand the meaning of the Mantras.
