Shipwreck Town’s 2nd album “Light In The Sky” explores themes of love, politics and the search for faith with music that ranges from full throttle rock and roll to acoustic ballads.

The album opens with the blistering title track “Light In the Sky” with lyrics that rage against blind faith and religious discrimination engulfed in a relentless dual guitar attack.

The more melodic “I Say Wait” takes on violent extremism across the political spectrum with swirling, chiming guitars and a harmonica solo that howls against those who would kill in the name of God.

“By The Time We Stop” is a swinging country-rock number riddled with violin that manages to poke fun at the Nashville music establishment and the legacy of Gram Parsons, all in just 1 song. Sample lyric: “Now the Palomino is just a memory/before they scatter our ashes out in Joshua Tree.” You get the idea.

Next is the suitably swampy “Levee Gonna Break” that tells the tale of a baby born in the middle of Hurricane Katrina while “bodies were rising on Lake Ponchartrain.”

The quiet “Miles And Memories” is an open hearted remembrance of a long ago affair. If you’re not careful, the pedal steel solos will make you weep.

“A Good Day” contemplates the random nature of events and the unpredictable fortunes of those caught up in natural events that strain our ability to comprehend. It is a song ultimately about being grateful for every day you’re able to spend with those you love.

“Jimmy’s Grace” is a jaunty tribute to the life and dignity of the singer’s father. This one’s for you Daddy.

“Some People Will Do” leaves no stone unturned: lust, drugs, missile defense, trickle down economics and environmental catastrophe to name but a few. The lyrics are delivered over a maelstrom of guitars reminiscent of Crazy Horse.

The rocker “She’s A Healer Now” is next. We’ve all known a woman like this. She rips your heart out and later becomes a therapist.

“If There Were Time” is a spellbinding trip through time and memory with a girl who “wasn’t just another Bellhurst girl money and position would tame.” Cue the violins.

The final track, “God and Me” slowly builds tension as the song’s protagonist wonders how he “can seek faith with spirit this weak.” Redemption and release come with the realization that faith comes through “the love I give and receive” and a simple yet dramatic guitar solo that closes the album.
